Okay, I admit it.    I cheated!   (And I’d do it again)

The first time, I was a little nervous and was afraid that I may get caught. I snuck around, making sure that nobody would see me. The hiding of the hand written notes, the late night internet searches, and light switch on textured wallthe constant looking over my shoulder while it was happening. I didn’t want anyone to know.

After all, what would people think? I’m a general contractor and I should know better. How could I possibly explain that I didn’t know how to do a three way switch? That’s right I am finally admitting it, I can’t continue the lie any longer. I don’t know how to install a three way switch.

This may mean nothing to you, but it has been a dark secret for some time now. Whenever I have to install a three way switch, I cheat! I get out my notes, diagrams, and photos a get the job done quickly so that I can move on to something that I am more comfortable with.

I will cheat again. I will no longer hide it, but I want to get it right. I don’t install three way switches every day; if I did, I’d probably finally learn to do it. What is important to me as a general contractor is to get the job done quickly and correctly - even if that means cheating.

Tom, I believe, all professionals MUST have the cheat sheet. Will you like a doctor examining you without your reports in his/her hand?

I do it - when I am at my buyer's consultation....to make sure, I do the the job right - and that's what you are doing. Nothing wrong in it because your intention is to do the RIGHT way.

I agree with Christine completely.  BTW, what is a three way switch?  That looks like an on/off switch.  I think I'm clueless here.

At least you're smart enough to cheat.  I hate looking at those directions and diagrams provided, I think they are more confusing.

Three way switches have always been a mystery to me.  Fortunately I can usually find a friend who understands them to help me.  I just had one a couple of weeks ago and called a electrician friend to talk me through it.  After about a minute of talking about it he graciously offered to come by and just fix it.  It took him all of 90 seconds.

and don't get burned while trying it!

Good morning again Tom. I laughed and enjoyed this. Nothing wrong with cheating and it takes a big man to admit it. What is a three way switch?

Tom, if you are ever in DC, there is a three way switch in my master bath that is goofy!  Maybe you can help.

Tom, I had to giggle, this seems to trip up a lot of people. When I do inspection I always test three and four way switches because they do get messed up.

Hey cheat sheets are cool, when in doubt read up!!!

It is a on/off switch, but it is special.  :)

Imagine a hallway with a light switch at each end controling one light in the middle of the hallway; both of those switches are three way switches.

Now Debbie, if you ask me why they are called a three way switch, I'll have to cheat!
