The Transit of Venus

By
Industry Observer

The Transit of Venus , literally a once in a life time event, was observed here in Verrado as well as other parts of the world.   This , coupled with the two astronomical events last week, the annular eclipse and the partial lunar eclipse, made this one of the best weeks for observing and joining with neighbors here in Verrado.  The planet's passing between us and the sun, served many other astronomical purposes.   Confirming sizes and distances of planets in our solar system as well as refining further the discovery of planets beyond our solar system to name a few.  Viewing the transit started at just after 3:00 PM here in Verrado and ended after sunset.  Here's a picture taken at around 5:00 PM AZ time.

The black dot  is Venus and the spots above the planet in the image are sunspots on the sun.

Give us a great perspective of how big the sun is.  Venus is approximately Earth's size.

Unfortunately unless you had the correct goggles or telescope you couldn't actually watch it.  I did watch a video of it the next day which was pretty amazing.  I wonder if there was a spike in eye appointments caused by people disregarding the warnings of eye damage looking directly at the sun.

Absolutely correct Paula.  We had a gathering at a neighbors home, set up our telescopes and provided a live feed to the wide screen TV in the living room.  The scope used for live viewing has a full aperture (9.25") filter with a protective coating to prevent those viewing the sun directly from blinding themselves.  Texas has to be as warm as we are here in AZ so the wide screen TV option permitted everyone at our party to view the transit in air conditioned comfort.
