Fishing Report, East Portal, Montrose County, Colorado. The fishing was good for Rainbow Trout, and all the fish were around 16 inches. They are just beautiful and very red. Large Brown Trout are also there, but we didn't catch any. Small flies around #16 or 18 is what's working. It'll soon be time for the stone fly hatch and then all the fish should be taking larger dry flies.
Fishing is restricted to flies and lures only. All Rainbows must be returned to the water, but you can keep up to four Brown Trout.
Even if you aren't into fishing, the scenery is wonderful. The East Portal is part of the Curecanti National Recreation Area, but you access the area from the entrance to The Black Canyon National Park.
The road into the area is something. It's a 16% grade going down along the Black Canyon for about four or five miles. No vehicles or trailers over 22 feet are allowed. The views all along the way are fabulous.
Once at the bottom you can hike along the river, fish, camp, picnic or just relax. There are bears and mountain lions in the area, so be careful with your food and yourself. We watched a deer come down to the river and take a drink. The deer watched us with as much interest as we showed him.
