Fishing Report, East Portal, Montrose County, Colorado

By
Real Estate Agent with Cedaredge Land Company

Fishing Report, East Portal, Montrose County, Colorado. The fishing was good for Rainbow Trout, and all the fish were around 16 inches. They are just beautiful and very red. Large Brown Trout are also there, but we didn't catch any. Small flies around #16 or 18 is what's working. It'll soon be time for the stone fly hatch and then all the fish should be taking larger dry flies.

Fishing Report, East Portal, Montrose County, ColoradoFishing is restricted to flies and lures only. All Rainbows must be returned to the water, but you can keep up to four Brown Trout.

Even if you aren't into fishing, the scenery is wonderful. The East Portal is part of the Curecanti National Recreation Area, but you access the area from the entrance to The Black Canyon National Park.

The road into the area is something. It's a 16% grade going down along the Black Canyon for about four or five miles. No vehicles or trailers over 22 feet are allowed. The views all along the way are fabulous.

Once at the bottom you can hike along the river, fish, camp, picnic or just relax. There are bears and mountain lions in the area, so be careful with your food and yourself. We watched a deer come down to the river and take a drink. The deer watched us with as much interest as we showed him.

Check out the short video to see one of the Rainbow Trout we caught today. The coloration is amazing.

Debbie, beautiful scenery and I love the video.  Why is it "catch and release" on the rainbow trout?  Do you know?

Hi, Juli...the catch and release regulations are to keep the Rainbow Trout fishing good in this stretch of river, and also to help the Rainbow Trout population recover from whirling disease.

This is an amazing place, and I want to go back next week to camp out. We'll see if I can get away, but the scenery is fabulous and you really do get that being away from it all feeling. This is a must visit spot.

How clear is the water there?  It looks pretty clear and blue from the video.  I've been out to the Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri many times and fished there, but the water is completely different.  It's a muddy brown where you can't see anything.  I, too, am enjoying your posts from Colorado.

My family is getting ready to head to central and southern Colorado and visit some of the National Parks.  I'm not sure I will get a chance to go as I have a closing at the same time, but maybe I'll find a way to make it work anyway...  It's been fun reading your blog and some of the Colorado AR blogs with localism posts!

Hi, Rob...the water is very clear and deep. We were watching the trout swim around at the surface. If you and your family get out this way, look me up. I love to play tour guide.

Hi, William...that's my husband Dan. He has the great loops in his cast. It's really something beautiful to watch. My casting doesn't look so pretty, but I get the job done and have more patience, so I can usually outfish him. Dan is so into fishing, that he got a master's degree in fisheries biology. His parents were so disappointed. They thought he was going to use that to go on to medical school.

Hi Debbie,

Great job with the fishing report and the video!  It makes me want to go fishing even though I've never been fly fishing.

The area sounds gorgeous.
