What is Pinterest?

What is Pinterest?

Last week I attended BlogWorld and New Media Expo.  This is a marketing conference all about inbound and content marketing (including blogging podcasts, streaming video, how to monitize your blog etc).  There were lots of great tips and "tricks" for blogging, creating great content and how to promote your blog etc, but my favorite slide of the week was this one:

What is Pinterest

With all the buzz about Pinterest being the latest and greatest marketing platform I couldn't resist snapping a picture (as did almost everyone else in the session).

As others on Active Rain have posted in the past there are plenty of good uses for Pinterest but there are also many reasons why this slide is so true.

Like all marketing efforts there should be a goal and purpose for participating in an effort.  If it makes sense for your business go for it.  If not, find something else that makes sense.

What do you think about Pinterest?  Is it a fad or the next great marketing platform for your business?

I think it's just a fad, and I say this because there are too many other social media tools, that we can use, that I believe might be more effective. We can't do them all. There isn't enough time in the day if we are also going to sell real estate.

That's funny.  There are plenty of ways to use Pinterest, just like there are lots of ways to use facebook and twitter.  You just have to find the way to make it benefit you.  For some it will be fantasizing about things they dream of having, and for others it will be to promote their businesses or share interesting info or share family photos and fun.

The thing that does concern me is repinning of photos.  We go to great lengths here to protect our photos, and then if we post them there, people are encouraged to repin them.  Not sure if I like that part.

One thing interesting about Pinterest that is different from most sites is that you can't just go there and sign up.  You have to be invited.  The invitation takes a few days to be processed.

Josef- I like Pinterest but more from a social platform rather than business.  I'm still concerned about the issue of copyright infringement.

Debbie - yes we all have to do our "day jobs" too.  That is where sites like AR fall into the mix since it is a niche social media site it allows you to do both at the same time.

Susan and Kathy - you bring up good points on copyright and others using your images.  Wish I had an answer for you on those points.  I guess if you want to play in the Pinterest sandbox you have to play by their rules.

I dibble dabble with it and pin my own blog posts there.  I also have boards related to fun things to do in my local area.  If you can get a viral re-pinning of your posts to Pinterest then I think there is definitely some SEO benefit.  Agents just can't be in the site all day, as that is more of a time suck than anything else.  Moderation is key to social media...

I haven't used  Pinetrest. I'm going to try it. My question is, if I want to use it as an advertising tool, how can I keep it local?

Who does not know Pinterest now?

Who does not use Pinterest yet?

Seems, it became #3 biggest social network in the world?
