High Park Fire in Colorado Explodes to 33,000 Acres

The High Park fire in Colorado explodes to 33,000 acres.  Front range residents are watching the spread of this incredibly, volatile and unpredictable fire with fear and trepidation. On Saturday, June 9, the fire grew to 8,000 acres; yesterday, the wildfire expanded to 22,000 acres. This morning, it is well over 30,000 and still with zero percent containment.  High winds combined with extremely dry conditions have fueled the blaze.

Here are several photos I took on Sunday afternoon from County Rd 29 just north of Hwy 34 west of Loveland, CO.

Hi Emelyn - Your photos give a good idea of how big this fire is. We're about 8 miles directly east of it, and have been watching it from our porch since Saturday - when we aren't actually enveloped in the smoke plume. This is a bad one, and they have yet to get an handle on containing it - there is going to be a substantial loss of property, and perhaps worse.

Looks like a volcano erupted! We had a lot of wildfires last year, but not 33,000 acres in one burn.

Emelyn, It is that time of year, it is not a good thing!  I hope that some rains will come and help douse some of the many fires in the Western US!  I pray that no one will be injured in this particular fire!

Emelyn - The images coming out of the national news about these fires, are disturbing!  I agree with Than's comment, one of your photos looks like a volcano erupted!  I hope they can get some control over this destruction before much longer.

Hi Emelyn,

These pictures are horrible. We are having some fires in California right now too but certainly not nearly as big as your fire. I believe I read it is the largest fire ever in the US. Very sad and stay safe.

Dick, stay safe.  As of this morning, the fire has exceeded 41,000 acres, claimed one life and over 115 structures!

Than, the fire is spreading between 20 - 40 ft. per minute and as of today, 0% containment!

Tony, so far, a 62 yr. old woman, Linda Steadman, has died. The firefighters are focusing on saving lives and structures.

Myrl, until the winds die down, this fire will continue to spread.

Kristin, the Hayman fire burnt over 130,000 acres.  This fire could potentially exceed the Hayman. To date, this is the 3rd largest fire in Colorado's history.
