Getting new shower walls?

Consider replacing the shower fixture too.

close up of shower fixture. You got tired of the old shower walls, and have finally gotten the guts to replace the dated materials with a new, up-to-date style. That is great news; you will enjoy the decision once the home improvement is completed. But this may be a perfect opportunity to do a little more.

Consider replacing the shower plumbing fixture also, they will not be a better time to replace the plumbing located behind the walls. This just makes sense, but too often it is overlooked or not considered an important change.

Changing the plumbing is particularly important if they are no longer making the parts for your existing unit. Imagine needing to replace parts that are no longer being produced and getting to the plumbing fixture now requires tearing into the new shower walls. Not good.

So if you are replacing the shower walls, at least consider replacing the plumbing fixtures at the same time.

That is definitely great advice, Tom...replacing old shower fixtures is a must if you're replacing old shower walls. Not doing so would be a little like leaving your old avocado green appliances in your new kitchen! :)

Tom, We did that on both of our bath upgrades.  Nice to get the temperature controlled valves in so no more wild swings when someone flushes or turns on the sink.  Liz can no longer threaten me by standing next to the toilet with her hand on the lever if I say something "wrong" :)   Bill

The new fixtures have come a long way in the last decade or two Bliz, great time to take advantage of them.

Excellent, excellent advice Tom. You would think it would be common sense, but we are sure there are many that don't even think about it. Can you imagine having to rip out a new shower? Now tips to keep the mold and mildew away?

You would think it would be common sense Al & Peggy, but that is not my experience.

Tips on mold and mildew? Sounds like a post in the making!

Tom, if people are gutting down to studs, it's an easy thing to change the fixtures. Changing the old copper to pex is a good idea too, less chance of leaking...

I saw a show that featured some newer fixture technology that added air to the shower head for more pressure! Great idea!

You are right Chris, and there will be no better time to replace the fixture than while it is wide open.
