HGTV's House Hunters - Faking It?

By
Home Inspector with US Inspect

Who doesn't have a story to tell after going through the house hunting process? And more than a few of those stories are good for a hearty chuckle or a genuine gasp from family and friends--but it seems that for HGTV real life just isn't quite interesting enough!

Viewers of the network, myself included, have always figured that there was a certain amount of "staging" involved with the popular show, House Hunters (and it's jet-setting companion, House Hunters International). And I'm sure as real estate professionals (who may have even been on the show) this community is even more saavy to the entertainment value-versus reality of the show. But after an article (read: exposé) posted on the blog Hooked on Houses yesterday, June 11, the world learned that the show may be even more "unreal" than ever thought! The show had pretty much explained this fact previously, but it wasnt' quite common knowledge.

House Hunters FakeTake a look at the article linked below and another from The Consumerist and judge for yourself:

-House Hunters: What It Was Like to be On the Show
-Just How Fake is HGTVs House Hunters?

Personally, I had already gathered that by the time the show aired the featured hunters had already decided on their favorite house. Many viewers were even a step ahead of me and had already figured out (and leaked on the Internet) that many times you could tell which house those on the show would get based on it being empty--since they were already in escrow. But the extent of the staging of the show may extend much further than anyone realized--as in the particular case in the exposé article, where according to the source, the other two homes they "hunted" weren't even for sale, they were the homes of two friends who were gracious enough to let them be borrowed for filming on the show.

Darn. Next they're going to be telling me that those before and after design shows are done to rooms on sets in a sound stage! Well, they fooled me (a little). Did they fool you? It will be interesting to see what kind of impact, if any, the news has on the network and the show. House Hunters and it's many spin-offs has dominated the network's line-up for quite some time and the top rated-show has a cult following (including an unintended spin-off--House Hunters, the drinking game!) But then again, if viewers of the show are anything like me, it won't really matter. The show will still be as light and sleep-inducing at the end of a long day, as it ever was.

I always wondered how they purchased after only seeing three homes for sale.  ;-)

I especially like that tag line for the shows done somewhere near Hollywood, CA.  The Realtor "will do whatever it takes to get the deal done".

Well golly gee, why hadn't I ever thought of that?

I've been able to work with HGTV - House Hunters International down here in Belize and it was a great experience. The show in which I was the realtor turned out great and I've gotten a lot of activity from it. It is mainly for entertainment value but the crew and the producers were very nice to work with and they gave us a tremendous amount of exposure! Many times I'm walking down the beach in the morning and some couple will stop me and say "Weren't you on HGTV??"...kind of cool.

HGTV is coming out with a new international real estate show which will premier this August. It's called "Live Here, Buy This!". In this show the couple looks at 6 houses in 3 different countries. It's a fantasy show but you can bet people will love it. Belize is going to be featured in 3 of these episodes. If anyone wants to know when just send me an email and I'll keep you posted as I get the air date schedule.

It happens.  An agent in our office was being featured on the show with a first time buyer.  Our listing was in escrow, but they asked if they could use it for the show.  They needed a third home, and our listing fit their criteria.  Our sellers agreeded, and it was used.  So it happens all the time.  Welcome to Hollywood!

Hi Chrissy,

Great blog post! I had no idea that it was rigged to that degree! I used to be a fan but haven't watched in a long time- mostly due to my schedule, but now I wouldn't watch it even if I had the time. What's the point? They may as well make a sitcom about house hunters or the "life and perils of a real estate agent" : ) Oh wait... they've already done that, and called it "reality TV" as well- HA HA!

Thanks for the very interesting scoop! Have a great week!

I hate these shows. I've watched a couple of times and then given up. It's not the staging that bothers me, it's the way they portray the agents. They make them look like all they do is open doors and then nod at the buyers. We all know how much harder real estate is.

Some of your comments are hilarious! Thanks for sharing! I'm feeling comforted that at least a few of you were as surprised as I was ;-) I also loved reading the positive experiences others have actually had with the show.

And yes, Valerie, the show has been a pretty effective sleep aid for me (and probably will continue to be)

Hi Chrissy,

I have been  one of those agents on HGTV.  Our show, "Desperate to Buy", was factually based. There was the basic premise of the show, and my clients and I were interviewed extensively before the producers came out. Then, we were interviewed in person. The  show was real- the situation was real.  They can only  fit so much house hunting or negotiating in a half hour, and at one point we had to backtrack  through the transaction for filming so the show would come together properly. Although there was some amount of staging there, the end result was all true.  Don't discount the network.  I certainly wouldn't based upon my personal experience with them. My two cents :)

Chrissy- lots of great comments here. I didn't realize the extent that they are staged. Definitely knew it wasn't all real but, to know that some of the houses aren't really for sale?! Wow. I do get a kick out of my "real" buyers that think they'll only see 3 houses and find the one they want, they normally get a good chuckle too.

My son did a snippit for a reality show that I won't name for obvious reasons. They wanted him to build a deck and then went on to hyperbolize about it's cost and time to build. It was really kind of a farce.

My client and I had an invitation to appear on the show.  However, once we learned that everything was staged and scripted it lost its appeal to us.  The fun and the show is in the unexpected results.  To me it was like watching a re-run of a past fight.  It does not have the same appeal when you already know the outcome.

But again it just goes without saying that Reality TV is not reality at all!  Its all about money and ratings!

By the way, the other two homes they would have used did make the final cut.  That part may be legit!

Well, I'm not sure what to say other than 2 agents in my area have already been on the show (darn them!) & they didn't seem to say or mention any of this.

While that one always seemed so staged, "Million-Dollar Buyer" seems a little closer to Reality (don't you think?) ...at least with the exception of getting that 5 Million-Dollar house under contract within the first few days.  Could happen ....but......

ALL "reality" TV shows are extremely scripted and choreographed, and most "conflicts" "decisions" etc are contrived and fake at worst, and overly embellished at best.  Everyone should just enjoy them for the entertainment value, and get over the idea that there is even a shred of "reality" involved.

Yes, that even includes our sacred cows like "House Hunters", "Flip This House", ...and God forbid, "Duck Dynasty". LOL.  And some of the "acting" is terrible too.
