This past Sunday, I got to take my 10-year-old nephew, Jack, on his first 14er. Jack lives in Oklahoma, and he loves visiting Colorado. I know that a 14er would be a tall order for any kid, but Jack is a phenomenal soccer player and quite the little athlete. I told him in advance that it would be difficult and long. He loves a challenge.
It was hard, and there were a couple of times that he wanted to quit. (It helped that there was an 11-year-old girl hiking with her mom who overtook us once or twice. He wasn't going to let a girl beat him.) In the end, he powered through and we made the summit of Mt. Elbert: the highest peak in Colorado!
Congratulations to you, Jack: I'm so glad we got to have that experience together. I'm looking forward to taking my own kids once they're big enough.
