Hiking the Cape Split Trail. When is it a Good Time to Call it a Day?
While on our holidays Dave and I found a hiking trail to see part of the Bay of Fundy, the location of the worlds highest tides.
We got to the Cape Split trail head and it warned it would take 5 hours there and back, not quite what we had in mind, but we had brought water, so we thought it might be doable. The warning about no toilets gave us pause though...
Soon after we were on the trail and I'm not sure if it was just me, but when the brochures say it's an easy path and well marked, that's kind of what I expected...
not this. You can see the rocks on the path, not bad necessarily, but a good ankle twister nevertheless... This is actually the best part of the trail!
Dave said we'd give ourselves an hour and turn back, but within 10 minutes we'd lost all traces of the trail and decided to turn back.
This is as far as we figured we'd got.
I have been on many trails in my time have even backpacked the Berg Lake Trail at Mount Robson. 26 km of trail going up the side of the mountain, you carry out everything, and hang your food in the trees so not to attract the bears. All of those paths, rough or not, were well marked.
I kind of feel ripped off that we never got to see the spectacular views that all the sites and brochures showed, but there was no way I was going to get lost out there either. The last thing I'd want is my next TV appearance to be on the evening news... :D
