Hiking the Cape Split Trail. When is it a Good Time to Call it a Day?

While on our holidays Dave and I found a hiking trail to see part of the Bay of Fundy, the location of the worlds highest tides.

We got to the Cape Split trail head and it warned it would take 5 hours there and back, not quite what we had in mind, but we had brought water, so we thought it might be doable. The warning about no toilets gave us pause though...

Soon after we were on the trail and I'm not sure if it was just me, but when the brochures say it's an easy path and well marked, that's kind of what I expected...

not this. You can see the rocks on the path, not bad necessarily, but a good ankle twister nevertheless... This is actually the best part of the trail!

Dave said we'd give ourselves an hour and turn back, but within 10 minutes we'd lost all traces of the trail and decided to turn back.

This is as far as we figured we'd got.

I have been on many trails in my time have even backpacked the Berg Lake Trail at Mount Robson. 26 km of trail going up the side of the mountain, you carry out everything, and hang your food in the trees so not to attract the bears. All of those paths, rough or not, were well marked.

I kind of feel ripped off that we never got to see the spectacular views that all the sites and brochures showed, but there was no way I was going to get lost out there either. The last thing I'd want is my next TV appearance to be on the evening news... :D

Peg,

I'm glad that I'm reading about your adventures here on AR rather than in the national news.   That trail does look like it would have been challenging with the overgrowth, dead trees and the wet looking conditions. (I don't like to get my feet muddy)  The prospect of getting lost when the sign warns about not approaching the eroding cliffs doesn't sound too enticing.  So, it sounds like you both made a smart decision to turn back.

Thanks for sharing the pictures that you were able to take.  It is always interesting seeing different places.

Peg-It does sound like you are having yourself quite the adventure. I could see the headlines now.

FLUFFTASTIC stager lost in the woods. Found alive after 5 yrs in the woods where she made a flufftastic hut made of anything she and Dave could find. She also had plenty of time to paint all the nature scenery all around her from pieces of wood they both found. Film at 11. Smiling

Sondra, I'm glad I survived to tell the tale too! lol I think Dave might have gone on, but with no landmarks to guide us back there was no way I was going further. Plus there was a possibility of having to water the bushes with a 5 hour journey... :D

Bob, we absotively are going to go to Newfoundland next time! We have friends that grew up there and have heard so many stories, we have to go!

Janice, I know lots of people like that! lol The last time we were tenting, out in the middle of nowhere, an hour from the nearest town/gas station, there were huge 5th wheel holiday trailers pulling up and parking near our tent. It was hilarious! There was even a woman in rollers at one point. Rollers! What for? The bears don't care! :D

Peg,  I don't blame you a bit.  That looks a little too rugged for my liking.

BB, I wouldn't have minded the rugged, but I'm not going to walk for hours and have the possibility of being lost.
