Entrance To Prince William Forest Park

Of all the programs that Franklin Delano Roosevelt implemented shortly after he assumed the presidency in 1933 the two that left a great physical legacy were the Works Progress Administration (WPA) and the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). Both agencies had the goal of putting a large number of unemployed to work on community infrastructure projects. The CCC recruited young men 17 to 25 years of age.

In Prince William County they were assigned the task of building Camp Chopawamsic (now Prince William Forest Park) to provide both recreational and educational opportunities for poor inner city children.

Prince William Forest Park has 153 of these cabins in working order - it is the largest collection of Depression Era cabins built by the CCC in the National Park System.

Four of the five original campsites are in the National Register of Historic Places. They have both group and individual cabins that are available to rent.

See Prince William Forest Park for full details about other recreational activities at this 15,000 acre forest in Prince William County.

The pictures below show a cabin being built by a CCC member in 1936 and an identical cabin as it looks today.

Prince William Forest Park has 21 miles of bike paths (12 miles paved and 9 gravel), 37 miles of hiking trails, ranger educational programs and the most beautiful natural forest you could imagine only 25 miles from the nation's capital. Oh yes, it has a lake for bass fishing.

During World War II it was a major training site for the Office of Startegic Services, the forerunner of the CIA.

More recently, we have enjoyed many camping outings at Prince William Forest Park with the BSA, Rotary groups and church groups. It is "The Great Escape" only 30 minutes from our home. Pictured below is a group cabin on the left and a dining hall on the right.

Since the cabins can only be rented for a very short period of time during the summer months you may want to consider the following subdivisions as a permanent residence. Eagles Pointe, Wellington, River Falls, Saratoga Hunt, Potomac Club, Winding Creek, Lake Ridge, Westridge, Old Bridge Estates, Brittany, Montclair, Ashland, Port Potomac, Rollingwood Village, Lake Terrapin, Lake Side and Meadowbrook Woods

Karen, I had heard of the WPA but was not aware of the project for building cabins. That sounds like a budget-friendly place to stay. Maybe a bit rustic, but affordable.
