San Antonio Botanical Gardens
The San Antonio Botanical Gardens is located at 555 Funston, San Antonio, TX 78209, which is slightly north of Fort Sam Houston off North New Braunfels Street. It encompasses 33 acres of colorful seasonal floral displays, and exotic plant specimens from all around the world. I know this is one of my wife’s favorite places to visit since she is the gardetner in the family.
Some of the highlights of the San Antonio Botantical Gardens include several formal gardens, the Lucile Halsell Conservatory, the Garden for the Blind, Kumamoto En(an authentic Japanese Garden), and a newly-renovated Texas Native Trail. This trail includes three distinct pathways of extensive native collections representing the Hill Country, East Texas Pineywoods and South Texas Plains. Also, there are four restored early Texas houses, a limestone spring and bilingual signage that enhance the experience of the Texas Native Trail. The Lucile Halsell Conservatory is a futuristic 91,000 square foot glass complex featuring diverse world climates surrounding an aquatic garden courtyard.
Visitors enter the Garden through the historic Carriage House where they find the Garden Gate Gift Shop and Carriage House Bistro (restaurant closed Mondays). The San Antonio Botanical Garden is open every day from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. (closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day.) $8 Adults; $5 Children (age 3 – 13); $6 Senior Citizens (65 and over); $6 Active Military personnel, Retirees, and Reservists (with current ID); $6 Students (with current ID). Group rates for groups of 15 or more are available.
The San Antonio Botanical Garden is highly suitable for use by people of all ages and abilities and is wheelchair accessible. Free bus service can be found on VIA Bus Route 7, the "Sightseer Special." Visit the website for more information on San Antonio Botanical Gardens.
