Happy Father’s Day!
It’s amazing how much life changes. Just a few short years ago Father’s Day was just another Hallmark holiday to me. I certainly honored my dad (who to this day I think was a wonderful dad) with coffee mugs, ties and other “stuff” that dads seem to accumulate. He always had what he needed so gift giving was always a challenge. Growing up I never (and I mean NEVER) wanted children. Even as a married adult I still kept this mindset despite everyone telling me I’d change my mind.
It wasn’t until my father became ill that I began to really contemplate the value of family beyond just me and my wife. So at the ripe old age of 36 we had our first child. Our daughter was only a few weeks old when Father’s Day 2011 rolled around so I don’t think I fully understood what we had gotten into yet.
I think it was The Monkees (or maybe it was Donkey in Shrek) who sang “I’m a Believer.” The last year with my daughter has been challenging but so rewarding. People always said “It’s different when it’s your child” and I agree. I’ve enjoyed all the ups and downs that come with fatherhood and I’m so excited to spoil them (expecting another girl in September) for the rest of their lives. I don’t think fatherhood is for everyone but I’ll say it’s suited me quite well.
Now I’m looking forward to when my girls get a little older and celebrate Father’s Day by showering me with mugs, ties, “stuff” and most of all their love and affection. So Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there!
