A Magical Moment in Time

Real Estate Broker/Owner with Real Estate Cafe LLC

Mel & Drew PetersonA Magical Moment in Time.  You know them well.  They come to us through incredibly special people in unforgettable places throughout our lives.  I had a few magical moments this past weekend that I will cherish forever.

I had the lovely pleasure of hanging out with my 82 yr old dad on Father's Day.  His name is Mel (too) but most people call him Rusty... I call him Pops.  He's a simple guy who likes to tinker with projects around his 10-acre yard.  He moves a little slower these days and he's becoming a little more forgetful too, which is why I cherish every magical moment between us.

I also had the lovely honor of spending the day with my 26 yr old son, Drew.  It was a special day filled with great pride and happiness, and especially surreal coming off the heels of a tragic event that took place in the Summer of 2009.  It was 2:30am in the morning when I received a call that every parent dreads... my son had been in an accident and totaled his truck.  Drew had been drinking and had fallen asleep at the wheel.  Fortunately, there were no other people or vehicles involved.

I remember thinking how scared and alone he must've felt having spent the night in jail.  When we picked him up the next day, he bawled like a baby.  Coming from a kid who never cried when he broke a limb or was knocked unconscious in a football game, we knew this was serious.  Drew came very close to losing his life that night, but what came out of that magical moment (a magical moment as his life was spared) was a more determined human being who began to make better choices.

So... you can imagine my joy and excitement watching my son walk down the aisle to receive a Bachelors of Science degree in Kinesiology from Cal State San Bernardino.  It was a magical moment in time and one that I will cherish forever.  I love you Drew!

Mel. Congratulations to you for raising a wonderful son who earned a BS in Kinesiology, too. Is he thinking of pursuing a career in physical therapy? It's amazing that somehow the events and circumstances in our lives lead us toward purposeful directions. Thanks for sharing your magical moments.

Mel:  How wonderful that you were able to spend time both with your Pops, and with Drew.  That's a great picture of you and Drew... you look like such a proud Mom.  Congratulations to you both... and a very gentle hugg to your Pops.

I lost my "Pop" in 1988... and would have loved to have spent Father's Day with him.  Treasure yours... as I am sure you do.

Mel I love your stories and what a handsome young man you have as a son.  It is the best of feelings when your kids do well in whatever they pursue, and it shows what a glorious job you and your husband did raising this fine young man.

Here's a killer idea... how about interviewing Drew on his experience and posting the video on your blog as a story to remind the rest of our youth what a GIFT life is and just how close he came to wasting this precious gift?

If only one person gets the message that would be huge!

Mel, My father was a kind "old fella" that enjoyed tinkering with projects like repairing lawn mowers.  He just did it because it was something he enjoyed, not for profit.

Solving problems and helping others will always be fulfilling, no matter how old we get.

As a parent, I received a phone call after midnight, any call between 12am and 4am never results in positive news, as you know.  It was from a Police Officer.  My 17 year old son would be arrested for street racing unless I came to pick him up.  I picked him up.  He was charged for street racing and recklessly driving in the wrong direction.  He could have been killed and/or killed someone else.  He got away with it, and I got away with a few things when I was young.  He also went on to graduate from college, is a great person and I'm extremely proud of him.  Congratulations on Drew's graduation and best wishes for his continued success.

I lost my father when he was 84, and only after his passing do I truly appreciate all of the positive qualities that he possessed.  We tend to take for granted what is always available.  One morning at 2:00am, I received a phone call to notify me that my father had died.  It's a date that I'll always remember.  He died on MY Birthday.  I regret not spending more time with him despite living in different States.

These special moments that you share with your father, son and your other beloved family members will assure YOU of having NO Regrets, as they instantly become cherished and timeless magical memories.

Oh Richard... I dread the day that I receive a call about my Pops... I know it's coming and it makes me cry just thinking about it.  I'm sorry to hear that you received that dreadful call on your birthday... I totally get that it will be etched in your memory forever.  Sounds like your Pops was a wonderful man!

And it sounds like your son had an ah-ha moment, like Drew.  I believe in second chances... and even third and fourth chances (some of us need more than others).  I'm glad that both our boys were spared from tragedy.  I'm sure you must be very proud of your son's accomplishments.  I'm smiling for both of us!

Mel - congratulations to Drew ( and to you) on this important milestone. He's a handsome lad and you have every right to be super proud of him and his accomplishments. Some people need lessons repeated before they "get the message."

Glad you had time with your Daddy too. :) You know how I feel about our fathers. Precious time indeed. ( Thanks for the email reply - great to hear from you and you are always in my happy thoughts. )

Hi Mel, -- so glad to be re-connected, and truly so happy for you and yours. Please salute your dad -- from a 'good' German bloke -- ex army (on the good side) and tell him to be proud, 100 % proud of ya!

I'm sure you're so happy, grateful and proud about Drew too - that beautiful hug, the warmth and the affinity between you too - I too share the feeling of gratitude and joy, as my daughter is still studying Genetics and Molecular Biology. I believe it is family, friends, and the other silent friends cherished in the secret chambers of our soul that empower us and help create the magic -- and the good vibrations - full circle...so that we can embrace the 4th Dimension. Namaste to you and yours.
