Happy 70th birthday, Sir Paul McCartney!
You might simply think of Paul as one of the Beatles playing bass, and later in the group Wings, but he is so much more.
While he first became famous as “the cute one” of the Beatles along with George Harrison, John Lennon and Ringo Starr, when the Beatles broke up Paul had a solo career, then formed the group Wings. For years now he has continued his solo career, recording, writing, and performing all over the world. Not to mention the fact that he has been kknighted by Queen Elizabeth.
But that’s still not all.
While in the Beatles, he and Lennon were one of the most successful songwriting team in history.According to the Guinness World Records, he is “the most successful
composer and recording artist of all time.”
He has 60 gold records, sales of more than 100 million albums and 100 million singles. His song “Yesterday” written when he was with the Beatles, has been recorded by over
2,200 artists, which is more than any other song in the history of recorded music.
Here is a video from his live concert in Moscow a couple of years ago - and the Russians knew all the words and sang along.

And the superlatives continue on and on with his records of being the best, biggest, most, and other adjectives that can be attached to his work. He has also composed film scores, classical and electronic music.
His company owns the rights to more than 25,000 songs, including those written by Buddy Holly, and the publishing rights to Guys and Dolls, A Chorus Line, and Grease. He is a tireless campaigner for various charities and campaigned against land mines and seal hunting and supported fights against poverty.
Not bad for an ordinary kid from Liverpool, born June 18, 1942, raised in a middle class working family, where his mother was the primary breadwinner. She worked as a midwife who rode a bicycle to work (Paul was the first member of his family to own a car).
His dad played trumpet in a jazz band and taught him how to pick out the bass line in songs they heard on the radio, and encouraged him to take an interest in music. I’d say he has done that!
Happy birthday Sir Paul!
