Summer is upon us, and safety is key. As I mentioned in my last blog article, prevention is one of the best ways to stay safe. Don’t wait until it’s too late to plan for an emergency. Preparing for long, hot, and sunny days will keep you and your family protected.

As most of the country is under an excessive heat warning, one of the biggest dangers of summer is the sun. It can dehydrate us, cause bad sunburns, and even threaten your health. For these reasons it is very important to follow these summer safety tips:

  • Drink plenty of water! Avoid drinks high in caffeine – these leave you at risk for dehydration.
  • Wear light-colored clothing, a hat, and sunglasses whenever you plan to be in the sun.
  • Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen! I can’t say it enough.
  • Remember to take a break from the sun and rest in a cool, shaded area.

Additionally, it’s always a good idea to keep a portable first-aid kit on hand for bee stings, insect bites, splinters, and minor cuts and scrapes. Having these resources in place will help you enjoy the long, lazy days of summer even more.
