A BOCA RATON DRAWBRIDGE OPENS FOR A MEGA YACHT

In Boca Raton,Fl. we have several drawbridges that connect the "Barrier Island " of

Boca Raton with the "mainland" of Boca Raton.                         DRAWBRIDGE

It is quite a unique sight as massive sections of the road are lifted into the air by manned

bridge tenders. This allows mega yachts, barges and day cruise ships to pass by on their

way to Lake Boca Raton or to the Boca Raton Inlet to the Atlantic Ocean.

Smaller boats that "clear" the bridge can go under the bridge at anytime. It is a beautiful

sight seeing all the yachts line up and wait for the bridge to open.

The bridges usually open on the hour and half hour.

Visitors to Boca Raton are quite excited about seeing the bridges open.

I was fortunate to be stopped by the bridge and was the first car in line, so I

snapped these pictures.

I KNOW BOCA, I LIVE HERE.

Is that where the name came from. The Boca Raton Inlet...Boca Raton translates to Rats Mouth in English.

Hi Ed, according to the Boca Raton Historic Society, the spanish word BOCA or mouth

often describes an inlet, while RATON means "mouse". Originally the name was BOCA RATONES ,

OR BOCA DE RATONES

it was a navigational term referring to the rocky inlet. The original location of BOCA DE RATONES

was Biscayne Bay near Miami,Fla. according to 18th century maps.

At the beginning of the 19th century the term was mistakenly applied to the current LAKE BOCA RATON

whose inlet was closed throughout most of the 18 & 19 century.

The "S" and "E" were dropped from the name in the 1920"s but the correct pronunciation is

still  RAH-TONE.

Thanks Joan, when I work from home, all I do is wait for the bridge to open to see what

is coming down the intracoastal. It is amazing the money floating on the water. Winter brings

yachts from all over the world. I have seen the NORWEGIAN QUEEN among other yachts.
