Ulster County NY Fun Things To Do, Rosendale Theatre Stronger Now Than Ever!

Rosendale NY Homes For Sale Ulster CountyThe Rosendale Theatre in Rosendale NY is a beloved local landmark that has served the community for generations. These days the theatre, located right on Main Street Rosendale NY, is a non-profit operating off of government grants and public donations. And though still screening films for the public, its role has slowly evolved from simply a theatre, to a community center and symbol for Rosendale NY.

Rosendale NY Theatre Ulster CountyA New York Times article about Rosendale NY put it perfectly when referring to the Rosendale Theatre as, "the old downtown movie house, morphed into a beloved institution." Originally built circa 1905, it was first called the Rosendale Casino, though it was actually a performance theatre. In 1949 it was refurbished into a movie theatre (the hot new fad at the time) by Anthony Cacchio, Sr. He was only 16 years old(!) when he opened the theatre and was still working a day job at his father's tile business. The theatre has been a Cacchio Family owned and operated business up until just recently, with Anthony Sr. (known as "Uncle Tony") continuing to work there until the mid 1990's. The Rosendale Theatre was known for its inexpensive ticket prices and old-school move theatre vibe. In 2010 ownership of the theatre was officially transferred to the Rosendale Theatre Collective, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the Rosendale Theatre and using it to benefit the community. The collective led a public campaign to raise funds and purchase the theatre after it came in danger of closing. The Rosendale Theatre is now enjoying a 2nd life; hosting a variety of events while continuing to screen feature films.
