Don't Sacrifice Long Term Growth for Short Term Gain: Working your SOI

As real estate agents, treating your clients well and working for their best interests results in long term benefits for your career.  There have been a few posts lately regarding lazy agents and agents who do the bare minimum for their clients which results in the responsible agents having to pick up the slack.  My belief is, not only is it the right thing to work tirelessly by doing the right thing for our clients, it is also the best thing we can do toward cultivating our pipeline for future sales.  Clients who know that we put their interests ahead of our own can produce leads and sales for years to come.

Last week, I had the unpleasant experience of a sales person who put short term gain over long term benefits. I live in the country and my water is supplied by a well. I needed some maintenance done on my filtration system so I called the local company that serviced my brand of system.  Even though my system is only seven years old, the sales person proceeded to put drops of water into vials and proclaimed that my entire system needed to be replaced...to the tune of around $5000.  None of the components were working as they should and the person who installed them did so improperly.

Hmmmm...my BS detector was ringing off the hook.  So I sent the salesperson on his way and made a minimal investment in water test kits from the local swimming pool store.  The results:  My water was perfect.

He knew I was a real estate agent.  He did not know that I specialize in acreage properties in Chesapeake, Virginia.  Therefore, had he been honest, I could have been a source of numerous leads for home buyers who needed to address issues with their well water.  But all he was interested in was that immediate sale. Instead, he now has someone who will tell all of these potential customers that they should steer clear of his company.

As real estate agents, we should always be mindful of how the hard work we put into today's client can reap rewards down the road.  But don't do it just for the commissions, do it because it is the right thing to do.

Kathryn, do I hear you on this one. I am always doing the right thing. Even if my client gets angry when I'm trying to protect him.

This is good advice. When I show houses I always tell buyers to look at resale value incase they have to move.
