Waldo Canyon Fire is just west of Colorado Springs on Hwy. 24 near Garden of the Gods. This fire is moving at speeds close to 1/2 mile per hour. 6 communities: Manitou Springs, Green Mountain Falls, Cascade, Chipeta Park, Cedar Heights and West of 30th from Gateway (Garden of the Gods) northward to Chuck Wagon are under mandatory evacuations as of Sunday noon MST. This is a photo taken from my neighborhood looking west toward Pikes Peak and the foothills.

Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper announced at this morning’s press conference that two C-130 unit from Peterson Airforce Base will be up in the air by noon Monday to offer their air support. No damage to structures or any injuries have been reported.

Woodland Park and Cheyenne Mountain High Schools are evacuation shelters for those families affected. The Pikes Peak Humane Society and All Breed Rescue are offering shelter for pets. The Norris Penrose Equestrian Center, 1045 W. Rio Grande Street, is providing shelter for large animals.

Colorado Springs’ weather forecast calls for record-breaking high 90-100 degree heat.

Please keep these communities, and our heroic firefighters who are battling 100 ft. blazes in your prayers today. The conditions are horrendous and terrifying. Shelters are overwhelmed at this time, please contact www.RedCross.org if you'd like to make a donation.

Thought's and prayer's for all who are in the path of this.....and still a long way to go before they can ever feel safer.

Thank you, Bud and Beth. Your prayers are much appreciated.

Dan, your right. The predictions haven't even been made about containment...at this point they're trying to keep embers from jumping the highway. Thank you.

Kim, I hope you and all the locals are safe. Last week we had awful heat wave.... then some storms that made my sons Graduation wind up indoors....It was awefull as sweat dripped down my legs and everyone fanned themselves with no relief.

Thanks, Ellen. I grew up in the midwest and am familiar with humidity. Its withering. Our 102 degree "dry heat" today had to be so incredibly intense for those poor firefighters it must have felt like an inferno.

Hi Joanna, thank you so much for your kind thoughts. Any moisture you could send our way would be much appreciated!

Kim - As I read your details I feel sick.  We have camped, hiked and enjoyed so much of the area you are speaking of.  Beautiful land.  I shake my head in sadness at the thought of so much land being burnt both in Colorado and New Mexico.  We too are still battling the fire beast with new fires popping up daily.  May God bless the firefighters in all their efforts and the families they leave at home to worry. Take care my friend.

Thanks, John for your kind words. So sorry to hear your area is suffering as well. I've been to Taos and Santa Fe only, but loved the terrain, culture and art. I wholeheartedly agree, may God bless them and keep them all safe!
