...Depersonalization...

By
Home Stager with Design2Sell

One of Design2Sell’s top suggestions to clients trying to sell their home is to depersonalize. Having personal pictures of you and your family make it very hard for potential buyers to see themselves living in that space.   Replacing your personal photos with more neutral images are an easy way to depersonalize.  This can be done using many different cost effective mediums. You can replace your photos with calendar pictures, old magazine photos, sketches, scrap paper or even wrapping paper.

90% of buyers can’t visualize the potential of a home. Which means preparing it to show to its full potential is critical.*

 * According to a National Association of Realtors® 2009 Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers

As an avid postcard collector from all my travels, I decided to pull them out of hiding and use some of the more neutral images in place of my personal photographs.

It's the perfect way to keep your decor and pack away your personals!

But of course  a few family photos are ok when marketing a family type home in a family type neighborhood.

Barbara,

I agree....one of the best and easiest thing to do to "neutralize" your home.

Great post Barbara.  Many seller's know, from watching hours of  HGTV, that they need to "depersonalize" their homes befre they sell, but they don't really know how to go about it properly.

Because of this, in many cases they just remove ALL personality, period!  This gives them a great idea of how to accomplish the goal.

Barbara - This is a great tip.  Sometimes the frames of personal photos are really nice.  This is a great way to reuse the frames, but add pretty artwork, instead of some grand daughter's wedding photo...
