A GOOD STEAK MAY NOT BE A GOOD STEAK

I like a good steak. I like the sides that go with it. If you flame broil the meat, there is nothing like it for smell, taste and satisfying the appetite. I say all that to say this. I have been watching some Food documentaries on Netflix lately and from what I have seen, it has turned off my desire for that blessed steak event described above

THE JUNGLE

When I first read Upton Sinclairs "The Jungle", I was enthralled by the descriptions he gave on what goes on in meat packing plants. It literally forces changes in that industry even though they kept a tight lid on their operations.

MARKETING AND REALITY

I grew up on Hot dogs and who doesn't like one with the works? But you then find out that the earlier "dogs" and sausages were made with left overs of every kind sort of things you would not eat if known. The picture of a perfect dog and what it contained was being examined. That forced changes in the Hot Dog industry too.

NATURE OBEYED DOESN'T NEED PESTICIDES

The concept of eating farm animals if done correctly is acceptable. Farms used to be run in such a way that they complimented nature. Today, we have turned our back on her. The farms of old had a mix of different things that made it work. Free range Chickens would eat fly larvae, keeping the infestation down while building up their own omega 3 rich yolks naturally. This helped the cows who ate the grasses which in turn helped keep the natural cycles going.

PESTICIDES AND ANTI-BIOTICS ABOUND

Today, most farming is done for production and commercial single uses. One farm will produce only one thing which is the kiss of death in the world of nature. If something comes along to attack that "one thing", you are wiped out. To prevent that, chemicals and anti-biotics are used to mitigate and prevent any calamity

I LEFT OUT QUITE A BIT

Organic or natural farming are the exceptions rather than the rule today. Things grown naturally and that are allowed to come about in the course of a normal cycle fair better and is preferred even though it is more expensive. I deliberately refrained from going into the details that have temporarily put a halt to my meat consumption
