How to keep the space above your garage warm in winter!!

Calgary HouseWhat you should do if you have a room above the garage that keeps you cold in winter?  If you are like many Canadians looking to solve this  uncomfortable issue, Calgary Herald has a good article with some solutions for this common problem! The main points are summarized here:

  • First of all, you should know that insulating the garage walls is NOT recommended at all!! Why? Because the garage has no heat resources to help make the temperature in the space above it warm enough, in addition it is not good for your car!!
  • The best thing you can do is to insulate the room's floor itself by spraying between the overhead joists in the garage, (using polyurethane for example). Building codes don't require that you cover the foam if you don't want to, a simple plywood or drywood will do just for aesthetic reasons!
  • If you are on a tight budget and don't want to spend too much on the spray foam, you can use pieces of rigid foam, fit them between the ceiling joists in the garage, then seal the edges between these pieces and the surrounding wood with spray foam.
  • What you can also do is to lay a high-density extruded polystyrene foam on the floor of you room with a layer of plywood on top of it (screwed to the existing floor). Another excellent product is the Barricade wall panels, a factory-bonded sheets of foam with waferboard sheets on one side.

After the work is done, if you still feel that you still need some extra heat, a simple electric heater will be more than enough to keep you warm in the very cold days!

Interesting. Not sure why it wouldn't be good for the car, but I've heard of people looking for an answer to this issue.

My master bedroom was above the garage, and I never had a problem. The floor was carpeted, do you think that helped?

Ryan, Sheri, new learning every day in our business - for example, I did not know that one should not insulate the grarage. Great tips. Thanks.
