The Highlands is one of the most interesting areas in Louisville. Rich in history, it is a three-mile stretch of homes and businesses. People actually started to occupy this area as early as the Civil War time period. Bardstown Road, one of the main streets of the Highlands, was originally a turnpike and tolls were collected. Most families who settled here were English or German in descent, although today quite a mixture of cultures resides here peacefully.
If you are looking to live in The Highlands, it helps to know some of the neighborhoods: part of Phoenix Hill is in The Highlands, Irish Hill, Cherokee Triangle, Tyler Park, Deer Park, Bonnycastle, Highlands-Douglass, and Belknap. There is also a band of small cities that are said to be the Upper Highlands: Strathmoor Manor, Strathmoor Village, Wellington, and Kingsley.
Never short on entertainment, Bardstown Road and Baxter Avenue have their share of popular bars, nightclubs, and specialty shops. The “keep Louisville weird” billboard is displayed proudly in the area. In fact, there are so many night clubs and restaurants, the residents refer to it as “Restaurant Row.” Bardstown Road is home of the Comedy Caravan where you can watch and listen to some live comedians.
If you like parks, golf courses and other places where nature abounds, you’ll love living here. Cherokee Park is hugely popular, and Cherokee Golf Course is beside it. Also, there is Willow Park, Douglass Park & Community Center, Seneca Park and Seneca Golf Course, Lucille Grant Park, Creason Park, and Warheim Park. Other fun pursuits are the Louisville Nature Center & Preserve, the Louisville Tennis Center, Louisville Zoo, and Louisville Mega Cavern.
The Highlands is home to two universities: Bellarmine and Sullivan. It is interesting to note that residences here in the neighborhood house a high percentage of college graduates.
Located in Louisville’s Multiple Listing Service (MLS) Area 2, which also includes adjoining areas Butchertown and Germantown, currently (as of June 2012) single family residences and condos are listed anywhere from $18,000 all the way to over $2.8 million.
