This is Olde Town Morrow GA, a commerical real estate development that was new to Clayton County at about the same time that I arrived in Georgia. It's also a creative vision that includes historic property preservation, naturally appealing to a house-a-holic such as myself. I guess that's why I feel a special connection to the project that compels me to keep it in front of my readers.

When we first visited a new seafood restaurant housed at one of the now-empty structures, my husband and I enjoyed a welcoming atmosphere, flavorful meal, and friendly service. We appreciated the charming environment and vision of Olde Town, and hoped to come back with friends soon.

Alas, the restaurant and most other businesses were gone before we could get back, and today the development is fully closed down. A project in limbo. 

Olde Town Morrow GA is a mixture of new commercial structures and relocated historic homes that were brought to the city of Morrow, from sites across the state in 2007 and 2008. The homes were renovated to serve as shops and restaurants, and new structures were designed to replicate the “Olde Town” persona of the development.

Olde Town Morrow’s shops are now shuttered, and it stands forlorn and half-developed. Why did this good idea go bad?  What’s in store for these stores?

City officials said they shut down Olde Town Morrow GA so they could try to figure out a way to turn it into a success. They say that a myriad of problems brought the curtain down on the development. 

But the City of Morrow announced that they will call for developers to submit their ideas on how to salvage the development. It is the first step, in a potentially long process, to — city officials hope — revive Olde Town as a public-private partnership.

City officials are optimistic that Olde Towne Morrow can be salvaged and turned into something that is profitable. The decision to seek proposals is the first public sign that a new direction may be on the horizon for the site.
