Henry County, Kentucky is a great place to live. I can say that because I was born and raised there! It is a wonderful, tight-knit community. There are fun things to do for those who are willing to venture around the county.
Recently I discovered the Smith-Berry Winery just outside of New Castle towards Drennon. What a find! You can go in any time they are open and get wine tastings, and their wines are reasonable in price. (Tell them I recommend the Bluegrass Blush.) They also have lots of wine accessories and cheese to go with that wine! ;) Smith-Berry is currently having a Summer Concert Series where they feature a different band every Saturday and have a local farm-grown dinner.
In Pendleton, you’ll find that Lake Jericho is a fun place to go, whether it’s camping, boating, fishing, or even just a picnic area. Admission (currently as of summer 2012) is $2 per person per day. Boat rentals are available and must be returned before dark. Camping can be done by tent or RV. Boating, launch fee, and camping cost extra.
Another great fishing/camping option is the Henry County Rod & Gun Club, located on Sunnyside Road within the triangle of New Castle, Eminence, and Smithfield. Despite the name, guns are not allowed, but they have fishing tournaments every year.
If you like to play billiards, Bond’s Pool Hall in Pleasureville is a good place to go. Their “pool room burgers” are legendary!
Henry County even has a beautiful golf course at the Henry County Country Club just outside New Castle going towards Campbellsburg.
Many people who live in Henry County have ancestors who were of Celtic descent. Nevertheless, people from all over, whether of Celtic descent or not, come to the Kentucky Renaissance Fair in Eminence. Events are held several weekends usually in the summer where they host games (such as archery competition), shows and festivals celebrating their heritage. Prices vary greatly, so consult the Kentucky Renaissance Fair website for more details.
Every Saturday from May to October, you'll find Henry County Farmers Market located in front of the courthouse in New Castle. Support your local farmers by buying fresh farm products.
Another cool thing about Henry County is the small town of Bethlehem when the holiday season arrives. People come from other states just to mail letters to their kids from “Santa” and postmark them from Bethlehem. Every year they hold a live nativity scene to celebrate.
There are two notable and unique restaurants in Henry County. Our Best Restaurant in Smithfield was designed around the “Our Best” old flour mill. It serves country cooking and has a unique gift shop across the street. Also, Scriber’s Station on Elm is a fairly new restaurant across from Norm’s in Eminence. It also has country cooking but serves alcohol in addition to food. They also have entertainment in the form of bands and karaoke! I have never been to either place but have heard lots of great things about them!
