Sometimes the mind starts looking for themes or coincidences. Something keeps recurring in your life, and then it hits you, that feeling of deja vue. Well, after returning from a trip abroad, I thought that I would be looking at things with fresh eyes, but a particular issue keeps arising in just these past few weeks: a foggy bathroom.
Fog in the bathroom? Well, maybe excessive moisture and steam would be more accurate. I have encountered it four times in the past two weeks. Hot showers create this fog, and the homeowners wonder why they are having such problems with moisture. In older homes, windows were meant to be opened during hot showers to let the moisture vent. In two cases, the owners had glass block into these windows without providing a vent for the steam. In another case, the vent fan was placed in the air conditioning duct, so the steam did not go anywhere. In the last case, the fan was installed wrong, so that air was blown into the room, instead of the moisture removed. I have seen these vents placed over the toilet in a separate room instead of the bath area. People seem to forget that moisture can do a good deal of damage, and it is in our interest to get rid of it.
Your bathroom window should be operable to allow this steam to vent, but cold mornings deter us from doing this task. This morning was quite chilly for me, when I stepped out of the shower, so I can understand not wanting this window open. The best solution is a bathroom vent fan, which turns on with your light, or it could be turned on alone for your shower. The vent should have a duct that allows the moist air to go to the outside. You do not want that moist air causing problems in the attic.
Well, now that I have written about it, maybe I will stop seeing this fog. Face your coincidences, and they will stop happening. Is that how it works?
