I have occasionally posted about Irene. She is 81 years old and I serve as her power of attorney. Recently she has been experiencing a greater deal of confusion. She has been unable to remember if she has eaten or what she is eating. Small things.
Over the weekend, while I was visiting my daughter in New York state, Irene called me to tell me she did not feel well and wanted to go to the hospital. I was in a pickle. How do you call an ambulance when you are in another state. I could not simply pick up the phone and dial 911. I told her that she would need to call the ambulance. The other problem I have is left to her druthers, Irene would go to the hospital once a week. Rarely has there been any identifiable issue.
A couple hours after this phone conversation, I received a phone call from a doctor at the hospital. He wanted to discuss Irene and her condition. He felt she needed to be evaluated and potentially admitted to a nursing home. I could not have agreed more. So today, Irene was transferred to a skilled nursing facility. This will actually be a good thing for Irene.
Now there will be several weeks of work for me. I need to go to her apartment and get clothes and possessions she will need with her. Her apartment at Franklin Street Apartments must now be completely cleaned out. Irene is better off, but let the work begin.
