Don't Tell Me How To Blog

In society, we are guided by rules and laws which govern what we are supposed to do and how we are supposed to do it. There’s no question that without these institutions, we would not be able to have the living environments that we enjoy today.

In the artistic world, rules are purposely thrown out the window to create new and original works whether they be musical in nature, sculpted or built.

Blogging began a new era and a clash between the artistic world and the world of rules. Some view blogging as an extension of journalism while others see it as a free form of expression. There are many blogs which blend the two. In this grey area we find that we are confused about what rules to follow and what rules to avoid.

THE CHOICE
Here’s the reality. You have a choice. Therefore, blog about anything you want in any way you want. I’m not going to lie to you, there are things you can do with your blogs that will obtain higher readerships, keep your readers more engaged and get people talking about your blog. I’ll even tell you that no matter what you do, there are consequences, both positive and negative, to your blogging actions. It would be wise to be open to the suggestions that can help you with your goals. However, don’t be fooled by the 'blogging police' out there. These tips, tricks and rules are for you to decide for your blog.

As a blog reader, be aware that you have a choice of what you want to read. It’s what makes this new world so exciting. Maybe you don’t like that someone uses video in their blogs, maybe you don’t care to hear that person talking about themselves all of the time, it could be that you just don’t find their work interesting. If you find yourselves disliking anything about their blog, send them the most powerful message you can. Stop reading.

THE ONE RULE FOR BLOGGING
For those who need to be surrounded by rules, I will leave you with one golden rule of blogging. It’s your show. It’s your dance. Have at it!

Matthew- I could not agree with you more on this.  Up until reading your post, I thought it was just me.  I was beginning to think the "Blogging Police" must have just got a promotion because there were quite a few "hand-slappn, "you're doing it all wrong" blogs posted the last few weeks.

Geez folks, relax and get a grip!  Life is too short to get all wound up over the how/what/where contents of someone's blog.  It's just like you say Matthew, if you don't like someone's blog just keep it movin onto to the next blog.

Good Post!

I have to whole-heartedly agree with Matt here. Isn't the allure of blogging directly linked to individuality and expression? Having stated that, I think a little self imposed discretion is always in order. My self-test has become "Who will be affected and how will they be affected by what I post?"

Matthew, touche. However, in a blogging community/forum there are rules that must be adhered to otherwise you may find yourself out the blogosphere. But, with that said, not everyone will like everyone's style...it's all a matter of choice.  What works for some, may not work for others...so blog on!

Why must we have rules for everything. I could see if I was employed by someone and was blogging on there behalf or was paid by them to blog. You can't put rules on someone's personal blog...that's just crazy!

Well stated Mathew. Blogging to me is all about self expression. I write about what I know, which is real estate but I do like to throw some humor into the mix. But that's just who I am.

I've been a member here for about 18 months and have seen dozens of folks who thought they needed to lay down the "rules of blogging" So many experts it's scary. I just ignore them and keep doing my thing.

Ain't no one ever going to box me in. I'm claustophobic. Plus my heads to big to fit in a box:)

Rule 1:

If you ain't doing it just like me; you are doing it wrong.

Rule 2:

Don't copy me.

Rule 3, but should be Rule 1:

Have a little fun!

We should all blog about what we are comfortable with and say what we mean.  Remember that the public is forming an opinion about you so you need to be ready to defend yourself and if you haven't been genuine they are going to figure it out very fast!

I'm no blogging "cop". I don't like unsolicited advice any more than the next person. That said it seems as if you've chosen to hang a shingle that says you know a thing or two about real estate blogging. What you've opined here might apply to the world of personal blogging, however, real estate professionals are constantly looking for guidance when trying to determine how to approach blogging. Many have no direction whatsoever when it come to content development.

"Therefore, blog about anything you want in any way you want."

Are you kidding me? The majority of the people in the AR network that are in search of help as to how to properly blog are blogging for a single purpose, to improve their businesses and incubate new clients. Consumers in search of specific real estate content could care less about a Realtor's cat or the birthday party their grand kid just had. If you tell a real estate agent to "Have At It" you're making a big mistake.

There are guidelines as to the best way to establish a business centric blog, without them the web is destined to be a wasteland of crap that is dumped out at the end of the long tail just taking up space waiting for the single page view it may get next month.

The advice given here will most certainly give the results you that you predict. People will determine they do not like the blogs that utilize it and move on to one that has been developed properly with the right focus on content. That said, this is the first time I've read this blog and I promise to do just what you think is best. I'm moving on.

Thanks everyone for your comments.  Thanks AR for making it a featured post, it's a pleasure to be a part of the AR community.  It seems that there has been a lot chatter about this topic lately.

Michael Price, I read your comment and appreciate your view. I'm concerned that you may have skipped over a couple of points in the posting.  For starters, I think we are talking about two different subjects.  This posting is about making unnecessary rules such as "no video," "keep posts 5 sentences or less," "respond to every comment that is made" and so on.  If you Google "rules of blogging" you will see that many out there have made plenty of rules to blogging.  These rules to which I am referring are unfounded by studies or statistics (so far).

What you are referring to in your comment are ways to make your blog more effective and to stand out.  This is a much different subject altogether and one that I not only encourage but write about.  Of course these are suggestions and not meant to part of the "must-do" rules for blogging.  Please read some of my other postings to know that I spend a great deal of time educating (and learning from) real estate professionals.  BlogofGeese.com has been built to encourage these topics to promote and escalate real estate marketing.

Sorry you'll be moving on for this post but if I didn't catch your interest this time, I'll get it with one of my future posts.

Gena Riede--You bring up an excellent point.  In this post is was unstated, but I certainly believe that in communities like Active Rain we need to have rules about decency, plagiarism and more.  Again, the rules to which I am referring revolve around those who tell you that if you don't do X,Y,Z, then you are doing it wrong.  One example was from an active rain member who wrote me an email that told me that if I don't respond to every comment individually then I shouldn't bother posting a blog at all.  I try to respond to as many comments as I can but to me this is not the absolute rule of blogging.

Thanks again for all of your comments everyone!

Right on Matt. It all sounds just about how it's supposed to be. The brave new blog world we all stumbled into together is a pretty darn conscious place. I'm afraid on negative consequences if we ever get negative and unconscious about it.

cheers

Some people take blogging way to seriously. As long as I conduct myself in a respectful fashion, I don't need to follow your rules. Its my blog and my expression, not yours. Thanks for bringing this up.

No rules for me.  If I wanted rules I'd go back to the corporate world.  My blog is for people to get to know who I am and what I do, and not all of what I do is Real Estate.

As for the comment from Michael Price: Do I detect a little bitterness toward real estate agents? Has no one taught you not to bite the hand that feeds you?

?? There is absolutely nothing I posted in my comment that would construe a bitter attitude toward real estate agents. I have been happily providing services to the industry for 15 years. If I felt otherwise, why would I spend the time to provide guidance and suggestions to avoid bad advice? I coud provide you with an extensive list of references to back that up, I think the author of this post would actually substantiate that as well.

There are definitely right and wrong ways to approach blogging as a business tool, this post suggests throwing caution to the wind and not learning from others who have been able to actually garner some success from the effort. After going back to read the post again as the author suggested, I stand by my words. I believe Matthew actually provides some good guidance most of the time, but that doesn't mean I have to agree with him and in this instance I clearly do not. As always, I professionally stated my position. That's part of what blogging is all about.  You'll find nothing in my words that even comes close to suggesting I harbor any "bitterness toward real estate agents".

I hope that clears up the matter for you.

Best,

Mike
