What is the difference between Wordpress.com and Wordpress.org?

When I start to work with a new client building a website, and we set up a wordpress site, the question of what the differences are between Wordpress.com vs. the Wordpress.org often comes up. It is a valid question for those who have never worked in either, and is a bit confusing at first. So if you are thinking about Wordpress, you need to think carefully before you start.

Wordpress.com

Pro's

  • It's free to set up, host and use
  • It is very easy to use and a great way to learn Wordpress prior to putting out the money first for a domain name and hosting
  • Hundreds of templates to choose from free!
  • Wordpress.com automatically updates your site as they come out with new features, and they control spam for you.
  • They perform back-ups for you

Con's

  • Free templates are not always updated, or only rarely. As a newbie, it may be hard to tell which ones are or are not. This could cause major issues down the line when Wordpress does their updates. The older templates may loose some of their features or functions, or they may be clunky to use over time.
  • Premium templates are not available for the Wordpress.com users.
  • (Non)buyer beware! The name of your site will forever have the .wordpress.com after whatever name you pick.
  • Although you have access to plugins, you can't upload additional ones not in the free sytem. This limits your options.
  • If Wordpress doesn't like your content they can shut you down and you will loose all of your content. This is very rare indeed, but can happen. Radical politics, pornography or in sighting violence would be a more likely reason, but because you are on their servers and they are hosting you, they do have that control.
Wordpress.org

Pro's
  • You have the ability to upload custom themes that are more SEO friendly, and give you more options that will match your style and needs. And there are more free themes available as well.
  • You can upload any plug-ins that are available to Wordpress users.
  • If you know coding, you can alter themes in the back office so they function even more to your specific needs.
  • You can use a custom URL, so you can create SEO within the name of your site. Also, a custom name is easier to remember than a custom name with wordpress.com on the end of it.
Con's
  • You will have to pay for hosting which can run around $5-10 per month. And you will have to find a hosting company like BlueHost or Hostgator.
  • You will be responsible for back-ups, updates and spam.
  • When purchasing a Premium theme you will have access to support. This is crucial to keeping the site going.
If you start in Wordpress.com for a learning experience and see just how easy it is, the transition for Wordpress.org will come more easily. And keeping the Wordpress.com site for testing and practice will allow you to keep your real site on Wordpress.org running without a hitch as you learn how to do things. Also keeping the free Wordpress.com will allow you to use the Jetpack Plugin, which has some great items to make life easier in Wordpress. It is now installed on new sites, but must be linked to a Wordpress.com site to activate it.

When I am assessing my clients needs and they want to actively participate in the functions of their websites, I always recommend Wordpress, because of the ease of use. I can show them how to easily post blogs and add pages, and can usually repair any isssues caused by their mistakes.

Wordpress has so much potential for anyone wanting an online presence. You can use it for simple things like sharing family photographs and information with password protection to full e-commerce sites. You can be as simple or as complicated as you like. You can have just one page or hundreds of pages. Assessing your needs before starting will let you know whether the free site will do, or if you need more functionality and/or creativity. I have set up both free and paid sites for people, depending on what their needs are.

Hopefully this will shed some light on What the differences are between Wordpress.com and Wordpress.org. If you have any questions that may help you assess which is best for your needs, just give me a call. Although I live in Hendersonville, NC I do work with businesses across the country.

Hi Karen- Yes I have seen that WP.com does have a premioun 'upgrade' with a few offers. I still think there is so much more with the .org and the premium sites offered there.

I love your site by the way. You do have a great voice. Forget the techie stuff and just write, that is what it is all abut anyway, right?

Wow, thanks everyone for the responses.

Yes, plug ins are offered in .com, for sure. But there are some, not near as many as the .org. In .org you can find plug-ins elsewhere, download them to your computer in a zip file and then upload it into your site. So you have thousands of options for very specific features/functions that are missed in the .com arena. A lot of them are good for Real Estate, and other business specific needs. I have even bought plugins for use on client sites. These are the ones I would miss in .com.

When I first came to Wordpress I was clueless as well. I would say that the biggest advantage to the .org is the vast number of options you have. Unless you are very techie, or have someone that is, you may not need all of the bells and whistles, and it is a system that anyone can jump in with.

The advantages are really control and better SEO. And if you are doing the work yourself it really doesn't cost that much to run it. Under $10 per month.

Don't get stuck in the details, just jump in and do it!

Gary and Sandy, I am glad that this article was able to shed some light on Wordpress. It really is an easy system to use. Just requires some time and a little confidence.

HI Jerri,  I'm another one who came over from Kathy's weekly post.  I'd like to say that the lack of support is huge when you have a problem!   I have had a .com Wordpress site for a couple of years now; it's actually framed into my personal website.  A couple of months ago, I logged on to create a new post and my Dashboard showed only one blog -- a different one I created but have never used.  My usual blog still exists, but I have to access it directly with its url rather than logging onto Wordpress.com.  Needless to say, this makes me nervous.  Do .com blogs ever just <poof> disappear?  If it did, there would be no one to turn to for help.

Diane, That is so frustrating. The .com has no support that I know of. Another negative for the 'free' side of it.

There are back up plugins, I am not sure about the free .com sites. I only used it for a few months years ago to learn the system but if there is a back up plug in, then you can retrieve that. I will look into that and let you know. but if you had no back up, my guess is that it is lost. I actually did loose a whole site once. I was devastated. It only takes one to get you back up as the next priority.

In the .org side which is hosted, some hosting companies will back up for you and others do. When I first started this adventure, I went with Bluehost after much research because they do a daily, weekly and monthly back up. If something goes wacky I can have them reload a previous back up, depending on when it went out. Other Hosting Companies may have this feature as well. It has been about two years since i have done any research on it. I am just really happy with Blue Host.

I am heading over to my old .com com site to do sone research for you.

Diane, I did a bit of research scouring through my old but still accessable account in .com and could find absolutly nothing about plugins there. I did read from wordpress that they do back up all sites on the .com side, but since there is no support that I can find, I can't tell you how to resolve it. What I found is that there are no plugins available for the .com side (see image below)

(IMHO) being safe about your content means being in control. Be safe about your content and go for the .org site. I was terrified to get into this whole thing, and actually read nd read and read for months before taking the leap. Once I did I laughed at myself at how scared I was because it was much smoother than I thought.

My advise is to head over to YouTube and search for video's on getting started with wordpress. Kids are doing video's on the topic and I am embarrsed to admit that those were the once I used to get going. Take the challenge and have fun!

Thank you for the research! If WP backs up all the .com sites but doesn't offer support, I guess the backup is just for themselves, in case the site crashes.  Not for the bloggers.

You are right of course, to lose years of content would break my heart. I just resent the $10/month (emotion talking here, not logic) on top of the other monthly dings to my bank account and credit card.  Since I have no choice, I need to just get over it, don't I?  LOL thanks again.

I feel for you Diane. I lost a whole site as well, and that is why I am on the .org side. If you make the switch you have access to lots of back up plugins! That is the biggest advantage to me. Blogging takes time and work, so you don't want to throw it away.

What is the difference compared to A/R? or is it just as good to stay with A/R?

thank you! I am new to the whole blogging thing and was trying to figure out what was what.  I don't think I am ready to set up a whole wordpress website yet but wanted to jump into the blogging world for consummers.  I just set up my wordpress blog and now just need to make sure I post regularly and spread the word.

Off to read about SEO and figure out what all that is about!

Chuck, It is so much easier than you think. I wanted to try it so bad and hemmed and hawed for almost a year. Then when I got in there, it was so easy I felt silly. Just jump in with a free wordpress .com site first and if you play around and it isn't for you, you have lost nothing but some time. But if you like it you can always upgrade to the .org side and not loose your content.

This is great!  I've had a wp.com blog for almost a year now to document my journey through Hodgkin's Lymphoma cancer.  It's been helpful for me to learn the ropes.  I'm now looking to jump into the .org side of it and was actually looking at BlueHost yesterday.  Thanks for the vote of confidence in them, they seem very reasonably priced and with your endorsement, I feel more confident making the leap!

Kristin, Bluehost has been very good to me in prices and support. They are fantastic! (And I am not getting paid to say that...) I think it is a wise move. Glad the article assisted you in making a decision!
