The Red Onion Restaurant in Alameda is located in the former Bernardi’s Cleaners building. The Moderne style sign and store frontage has been maintained much as it was when the old cleaner was built in 1946.  It is a cool looking building, just perfect for the American diner in Alameda.  The Red Onion is located at 1222 Park Street.  Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served from 10:00 am to 10:00 pm daily.

The Red Onion with its American diner feeling with counters, tables and decor suited to  the diner style.  It has found a good home in Alameda on Park Street. This is the third Red Onion restaurant in the East Bay, the other two are in Pinole and Vallejo.  The owners, Johnny and Buffy are brother and sister.  Buffy is a long time Alameda resident, so the Alameda location was perfect for her.

The Red Onion serves good American fare with breakfast including their wonderful omelets. They have a wide variety of burgers and their amazing chili cheese fries.  They haven’t forgotten vegetarians. They provide tasty options like portabella burger, garden burger and vegetarian noodles.

The Red Onion has gotten mostly positive reviews, like this review I found on Yelp:

“ I went to high school in Pinole, and Red Onion was our fav hang out spot. So nice to see it come to Alameda. The owner is a dear, always recognizing us, saying hi, and stopping by our table....Oh and they're open late. Everything in Alameda closes early.. they've said if you get in by 9:59 they'll serve you. Is that nice or what?”

Looks like a couple of really nice places to eat. Like what they've done in the remodels.

Hi Evelyn,

I love the name of this restaurants as red onions are my favorites. Yum!

I love the little black and white picture and so neat that this place is still in business. That is what is so great about our country; start up businesses and make a decent living. If I ever get up there, I will be sure to stop in.

Happy 4th.

Jay:  The owners received an award from our local Alameda Architectural Preservation Society for their remodeling.

Kristin:  That picture was taken in the 40's when the the cleaner opened.  So good that the owners remade the sign to mirror the cleaners sign.

What a wonderful spot to go for lunch or dinner.  I love this building and the decorating.  This is my kind of place.  I especially like to sit at the counter.  Maybe I'll see you there Evelyn.

Evelyn

We've eaten here a few times. I went to my first Red Onion in Pinole, and loved they way they cook their hamburgers. But this time, my favorites are their omelets. I especiallly like the portabello mushroom one, and anything with artichokes and spinach. And yeah....love the extra crispy potato hash.

Pacita:

I read your blog and it was very good.  You mentioned the omelets in your post.  My blog was not as good as your's but I had only eaten there once and while I enjoyed my meal my husband hated the place.  I tried to be neutral in what I said.
