"This Is an Homage to the Power of Story Telling"

Reblogger Ellen Caruso

Like Shar says below, this book will have you swept in and wanting to solve the mystery of how a 4 year old girl wound up alone on a ship. It must have been scary for her, but a dream I might wish upon myself (to be left alone) as things have been quite busy. Reading is my only escape these days and "The Forgotten Garden", does not dissapoint my need to to get lost in its plot.

If your looking for some good summer reading, pick up a copy of "The Forgotten Garden", and Join us on the 15th when Shar hosts a book club meeting and we share our opinions of the book.

"This Is an Homage to the Power of Story Telling". That is how the July book selection for the Active Rain Book Club 'Reading In the Rain' is described and it is the truth!

I am not even halfway through "The Forgotten Garden" and I already love the character development and storytelling. I was hooked almost from the beginning.

The story weaves its way back and forth between four generations....unlocking the mystery of an abandoned four year old little girl on a ship heading to Australia.

You realize quickly how interlocked four generations can be even when they don't know of each other. I am loving the mystery involved and can't wait to turn each page to uncover another piece of the puzzle.

If you haven't yet joined our book club or purchased the book there is still time! We don't meet to discuss the book until July 15th when I will write a post and the discussion will begin. And of course great food and drink will be provided!!

This is going to be a good one and what better time to curl up with a cold drink and a fascinating book than the hot days of July.

Here is a quick summary of the book's plot......

'The Forgotten Garden' by Kate Morton

Book

In 1913 London, a little girl plays hide-and-seek on the deck of a ship while waiting for the woman who left her there to return. But as darkness comes, the girl is still alone when the ship pulls out from the dock and steams away on a long, grueling journey to Australia. There, the dock master and his wife take in the small castaway who is carrying nothing but a child’s white suitcase containing a few clothes and a book of fairytales. They name her Nell and raise her as their own. It’s not until her twenty-first birthday that they tell her the truth. Nell returns to England in search of her identity and that of the mysterious woman who abandoned her. Her quest is not fulfilled until after her death, when her granddaughter, Cassandra, travels to a cottage on the cliffs of Cornwall and discovers the secrets of its forgotten garden.

A tale of outer and inner journeys, and an homage to the power of storytelling,The Forgotten Gardenis filled with remarkable characters who weave their way through its intricate plot to astounding effect.

If you haven't joined 'Reading In the Rain' yet please join our group but mainly get the book and join us for the discussion on July 15th. I am already planning the menu!

Ginny, With all those beautiful Beach photos you post, I wish you had time to sit in a chair with a view and read.

Valerie, Looking forward to our discussion, seems you must have enjoyed it and will refresh your mind quite pleasingly.

Kristin, lately its been hard to find the time, but I do make a point of reading in bed rather than tv when time allows.

Ellen, this book sounds fascinating and I still haven't purchased a copy, but hope to do so this week.  We are still cleaning up after our storm last Friday...we have 10 trees down in our back yard.  I did finish "Defending Jacob"... and it was wonderful.

Debb, Don't know why time seems to be flying so fast and I'm so tired and rundown to play in the Rain. My daughter left for Italy and there is alot going on. Reading is my only escape, oh and perhaps some exercise relaxes me too.

Nick, hope you find the time to get on your bike and ride...I know thats your relaxation!
