Choosing the right type of shower walls in Sacramento

You know that feeling; you are starting to get embarrassed about letting your Sacramento guests see your bathroom shower walls. Perhaps you have already decided to get new shower walls in your Sacramento home, but just can’t decide which type of shower walls to install. Here are some considerations in making that final decision. Price, style, installation time, and added value are all considerations that need to be looked at before getting started.

Let’s look at a few of the different types of shower wall choices to get a better understanding of the options available to you.

Pre-fabricated panel shower walls

The prefabricated panels can be as simple as a flat panel that is secured to the walls with construction adhesive, caulked and it’s ready to use. This type does little more than allow you to have a functioning shower. While it is quick Shower wallsto install and is the cheapest wall type; there is no value is added, it has no style to it.

Pre-fabricated shower wall systems are also available in a sturdier, longer lasting type. These shower walls are installed using nails or screws fastened to the framing of the wall and rests on top of the tub. A molded one piece, three wall surround is available, but getting it into place usually makes this option unfeasible. A popular choice is the three piece shower wall assembly that snaps into place for a good water tight fit; some systems do not even require caulking. Of course there will be some drywall repair that will have to be done after the installation of the walls.

The cost is still at the lower end, and the styles do vary between manufacturers. The installation is not too difficult; many homeowners have chosen to do it themselves. This type does not add any real value to the property. Its durability makes this a good choice for the lower value home, and rental property.

Check out some of the options in pre-fabricated shower walls.

Constructed Shower Walls

There are a much larger list of options when it comes to building the walls in place. The choice of natural stone, ceramic tiles, and manufactured tiles and panels can be quite an array of decisions. At to this the different grouts, accent pieces, heights and plumbing fixtures and you can see how this can take some time to find the style that you are looking for in a shower wall.

Get some design ideas for your new shower walls here.

A constructed shower wall requires more skill than the prefabricated walls, and for many, this means hiring a contractor to do the work. This can mean several days of workers in your home. Hiring a contractor will cost more but the professional results can be well worth the trouble-free completed product. A professional installation of the shower walls can add value to the property as well as maximizing the life of the improvement.

There are many things to consider, contacting a contractor before beginning to choosing the right type of shower walls in Sacramento may be helpful.

On this subject, if it isn't done right, everyone knows it. I have seen them all as you have. Those pre-fab kits cure anything needing some upgrade or repair...good post

Tom, thank you for sharing the advantages and disadvantages of pre-fabricated walls but the constructed shower walls are really eye-catching.  Well, consumers have the options to choose what's the best fit for their budget.

Tom:  Presently, we're in this situation in our home.  A leak prompted the change and update.  Now we're in the stage where we're deciding what tiles to use to finish the project.  Not easy!  Unbelievable amount of choices out there.  Appreciated the link to shower ideas.  Only one thing ... do you come to IL??

Thanks Tom, Really good info. It would be good to have some info on the right and wrong to do tile. It looks much better than fiberglass but I have seen too many that were moldy or leaky.

Tom, great post! Lovely choices of walls, whether tile, constructed or prefab.Contractors can help people make the right decision with the right products!

Using blue board or cement board helps with the mold issue and using the Schluter Kerdi systems can make everything 100% water proof! We used it when we did out bathroom reno.

Good to hear from you John.

There are many choices, and how they clean up over time can play a role in the selection.

Debbie has a lot to offer doesn't she?

I this that it is great that you have offered to help your cousin with the bathroom remodel Roger. It's always good to have friendly advice.  :)

I'm not real sure what kind of tile you used, but if it was a ceramic tile with a Matte finish you should be okay. The grout lines needed to be sealer with a grout sealer.

I'm more concerned that there may be a plumbing leak.

Hope the answer comes quickly Zeta.

I too get entertained by what I see Mike. There is nothing wrong with asking questions and doing some research before beginning a project. The information is out there!

Thanks for the comment today Toni

I guess it really depends on the budget and home Valerie, it doesn't make sense to overimprove.

It would be great to see some before and after photos Michael.

There is certainly a product for every need Richie, we just need to find that right one for each job.

As you know Regina, there are some absolutely beautiful tiles and stone available. Finding that best fit is the key.

That may be a future post Al & Peggy, my experience is that the caulking itself may be the problem.

Yeah right Joni, 30 - 40 years from now, you may need that walk-in shower. No need to wait to the last minute!

You are funny Gene, I wish I could come to Illinois. You are right about the choices - Holy Cow!

Maybe that can be a future post Wayne. I'll put it on the back burner for now.

Peg, The Schluster Kerdi system may be a viable solution to waterproofing a shower, I have not used the product myself. Like most things, proper installation is important.

It's just a matter of knowing what shower wall options are available to choose from, then start to narrowing it down Silvia

The bigger houses get the bigger selection of ideas Gene.  :)

I go for the constructed shower walls myself. Sure it's 3 to 4 times the cost but it will quadruple the return on your investment. We've been doing them for decades and they're a much better value and ROI come move out time. But most importantly is the enjoyment your client will get out of a beautifully designed and constructed bathroom.
