Tarrytown NY - Sleepy Hollow NY Fireworks - Independence Day 2012Happy Independence Day everyone!   Each time we celebrate the 4th of July – we tend to think of it in terms of picnics, having fun with friends, a day at the beach and fireworks. But we should never forget the perilous course our founding fathers took and the many twists and turns that could have derailed colonial independence.  There were so many battles to win, so many political compromises to be made.  These days I often feel as if we are throwing it all away in a fit of selfishness and a rampaging case of  willful ignorance.  Yet there are signs of hope.  While I was on the River Walk this evening, there  were young people out on the walk urging unregistered citizens  to register in time for the Novemeber elections and explaining the importance of voting to those who already were registered.  It was good to see since so many under 30 have become disengaged either because  apathy or  cynicism.

But now it is time to have some fun.  I was at the Kensico Dam in Valhalla last night and the following video is compilation of still photos from that event.  Last year the event boasted over 20,000 attendants.  It was at least close to that level this year.  I arrived at about 6 PM and just barely got a decent place to park my car.  So if you want to do this next year, get there no later than 6 PM – but 5:30  is better.

Using a tripod and a long shutter speed, I worked with bracketed f-stops to be sure that I got a decent exposure on at least some of the shots.  I kept the ISO at 100.  I was able to get some pretty decent photos.

The still photo to the right  is from the Tarrytown/Sleepy Hollow fireworks which were this evening.  I’ll probably post another video in the next day or so…  Even though part of the exposure is blown out – I loved the ability to see the lighthouse and the reflection the fireworks made ont the water with that particular shot…

Ruthmarie!  I was at that display-(how did I not see you, there wre only what-about 30,000 people there ?) but this presentation was the best view of all!  I so admire the skill you have both with the photos you take and the technology you have mastered to show them off. Job very well done!!

Hi Marie, How on earth did we miss each other?  As to the photos, I found some help online.  Fireworks are difficult becuase it goes from very dark in the background to super-bright at the center of the display.  I did have to adjust what they told me a bit.  I needed a wider aperture than most of them suggested, but after fooling around for the first 5 minutes, I was able to find settings that worked.  I was surprised at how well  it actually worked.  I was hoping to come out with maybe 5-6 good shots.  I was far more fortunate than that.

Hi Debbie - Thanks - I was looking for people I knew.  To be honest, I hadn't planned on the event because I know that through experience, if you can't manage to get in early, its really difficult to get close enough.  But I got lucky and was ready early.

Hi Gail - My thoughts are with you and your hubby.  I hope he will be doing better soon!

Hi Richard and Beth -    Thanks. The Kensico Dam  always offers a rockin' display.  I'm lucky to have that to work with. Too many people are not paying attention.  They feel economic pain and they just lash out without digging any deeper.  Right now our presidential elections are being decided by a few people in a few states that seem to change their minds as the wind blows. If there was a national debate of substance going on, I would feel a whole lot better.  Meanwhile, we are at the mercy of industry that quite frankly have made it clear that they don't want to create any new jobs here.  That's been crystal clear for years.  You can slash their taxes to zero and let them pollute to their hearts content, but that won't create jobs in the US. Foreign labor is simply too cheap to resist.
