Buying a home is one of the most intensive research projects you will ever encounter.  From finding the right agent to represent you, getting pre-approved for a loan, contracts, property condition issues.....So much to look at it can make your eyes cross.  

A very important and fun investigation that you definitely want to investigate is the neighborhood.  It is important to completely investigate many aspects of your new neighborhood to see if it really fits into your lifestyle.

FIVE ITEMS YOU NEED TO KNOW WHEN BUYING A HOME IN MONTEREY COUNTY:


1. DETAILS ON CRIME: 

Before you buy a home or move into a neighborhood do research to check out Megan's Law databases and call the local Police Department to find out if there has been any crime activity in the area in the recent past.

2. CHECK OUT THE HISTORY OF VALUE:

Location, Location, Location...you have heard it a million times.  Let's face it, some areas are more valuable than others.  Although some of the hardest hit areas are where you will find the best deals, it may take longer to re-bound.  So, check home values and make sure that you plan on owning the house long enough for it to gain equity.

3. DOES THE NEIGHBORHOOD HAVE WHAT YOU NEED?       check out neighborhodd at different times

Does the area you are considering meet your lifestyle needs?  Find out what is available in the immediate neighborhood by pulling up information on Yelp, Trulia, and Google.  Your Real Estate Professional should also be able to give you information on all of the attributes of the neighborhood.

4. NEIGHBORHOOD HOT SPOTS:

Again, this can be found by asking your Real Estate Professional or looking up the neighborhood on Yelp, Trulia, Google by pulling up information on the neighborhood or city.  Look for Farmer's Markets, School information, stores, parks, restaurants and other services that are important to you.

5. CHECK OUT THE NEIGHBORHOOD AT DIFFERENT TIMES OF THE DAY OR WEEK:

Very important to take a drive and see what the flavor of the neighborhood is morning, noon, night, week-ends and during the day.  You can visit during the week and see blue skys, peacefulness and sun, only to find loud music, loitering, and lots of traffic on another day.  The vibe in a neighborhood can change at different times of the day and week, so don't be afraid to check it out.
