The Catch of The Day at the San Diego Bay Harbor!

The Catch of The Day at the San Diego Bay Harbor !

So what's better than just seeing something that is truly awesome! Answer: Being able to share it with friends and family here in the Rain.

Yesterday on the 4th of July, I encountered one of the most stunning vessels I have ever seen up close and personal. While I was not invited aboard ( a simple oversight I am sure, LOL ) I could easily observe the outside of this incredible yacht. Love the helicopter on board!

This is a complete redo of the ship originally built in 1998 was lengthened by 20 feet and redesigned by a true yachtsman. This is the world famous Attessa which is 225 feet long and owned by industrialist, entrepreneur and philanthropist Dennis Washington who visits San Diego with some regularity. As you might be able to tell from the flag, it is registered in the Caymen Islands and is one awesome looking ship.

I met one of the staff and had a chance to speak with him briefly and he was very gracious to be able to answer some of my questions. Quite a nice chap, actually! There are two ships with this name, this one and another that is 330 feet long. Both completely redesigned in similar styling. Both owned by the same owner. This one currently has a staff of 16 and accommodates 10. "Quite comfortably", he added.

Just take a look, it was simply too large to get one photo without a wide angle lens ( which I wasn't carrying). This first photo of the ship's stern was taken behind the San Diego Convention Center as was the second photo of the bow. The third photo was a night-time photo and taken with a telephoto lens from atop the Hilton Hotel. ( a pre-fireworks photo ). Since I have no fireworks photos because all the fireworks exploded at the same time ( computer glitch- see separate post ), what I do have photos of are not so disappointing to me since the fireworks failed. Sort of making lemonade from the lemons analogy 😊

This third photo was taken from the rooftop of the San Diego Hilton Hotel with a 300mm telephoto lens.

Hi Roy, I think so but it is not just the purchase cost, the price of one fill-up is almost $300,000. Not exactly a credit card size purchase :-)

Hi Silvia, I already did have that dream, LOL. The problem is dreams usually don't add up to actual memories.

Hi Patricia, I thought that too. Nice touch! Of course the whole thing is was so awesome, the helicopter was only the attention getter to begin taking in the scope of this amazing vessel.

Hi Joan, too funny. You should see the basket of shoes and flip flops. Whatever they are wearing on the ship must be designated only for the ship and not street worn. As they come on and off, they were changing the footwear. That is how to keep nice floors.

That is quite a stunning boat, and wonderful photos. Much more impressive, I think, than the fireworks display. LOL

Hi Jon, That was a way better way of describing it. A magnificent disaster. My camera was set for the sky and all that was on the memory card was a massive mess. LOL.

Hi Jeff, Thank you and I would have to agree a day later. At the time, I was really disappointed as were the many others that wondered what had actually happened.

Gee - I wonder if Dennis Washington came to San Diego to take in the fireworks show!  I hope he wasn't disappointed with the shortness of the 15 second explosion. . .LOL  In spite of the fiasco, you certainly found plenty of wonderful subject matter to photograph, William!  Neat stuff!

Indeed! I have said to my wife many times when we go some place..." You that wasn't that great BUT I did get a few good shots" :-) Great photos to assuage the frustration of a fireworks fail...

Hi William,

I think your pictures are wonderful but I especially like #3 as it is so unusual. I love to see the helicopters land on boats and buildings; it amazes me every single time.

William~gee it's hard to decide which one is my favorite. And you always have the most interesting experiences in life to share with us--hobnobbing with the almost-rich&famous! (I loved the nice chap part). And I know all about not having the right lens for the moment.

Bummer about the fireworks, but you DID make lemonade, my friend!

William, those vessels are magnificent! While I love old ships, these 3 new ones are incredible! With ships like that, the global economy can only get stronger.

I'm so glad you posted these vessels. The content and photography was excellent!

What wonderful ships!  Those are quite a site and I love the photos.  You certainly had a great "display" to offset the fireworks issue.  I think that was in your neck of the woods.
