Ocean Park is home to the largest number of historical homes in Santa Monica, including Third Street Historic District. The Third Street Historic District is bound by Ocean Park Boulevard, Second, Hill and Third streets. Homes built prior to 1935 contribute to the historical past of Ocean Park’s prominent families.
Abbot Kinney, before developing “Venice of America,” owned property on the west side of Second Street in the District, and also gave Ocean Park its name, naming the area after the eucalyptus groves planted by the Vawters near South Santa Monica Beach, cited here. Taking a walk on these streets of diverse architecture will give you a glimpse into Santa Monica’s past and eclectic culture.
The “Bay Street Cluster” in Ocean Park is also a historic district in Santa Monica. 137, 141, 145, and 147 Bay Street are home to a cluster of four two story multi-family buildings preserving California craftsman architecture. They border the old Pacific Electric railway, and provide a link to the development of Ocean Park.
