Tag you're it

No this is NOT a meme. Don't be afraid I am NOT going to tag anyone.

Posting for points

A member's post last week mentioned memes. Since that post became a "Members Only" post I am not going to quote the post but I am going to paraphrase it.... The problem with ActiveRain is people posting jokes, recipes and meme's for points.

The meme that swept the real estate blogosphere in December 2006 and beyond...

Who started the meme that swept through ActiveRain December 2006 and just won't die? Paul Chaney. Many know Paul Chaney from ActiveRain but he was not a member when he started the meme out in the real estate blogosphere. Paul was then blogging and working for Blogging Systems (a company that sells blogs to the real estate community.)

Paul Chaney wrote the book on real estate blogging... Realty Blogging

The First (?) ActiveRain Meme

Paul tagged Mary McKnight of RSS Pieces (real estate blogging) who tagged Jay Thompson, The Phoenix Real Estate Guy who introduced the meme to ActiveRain. Did Jay post The First (?) ActiveRain Meme for points? Hardly Jay posted a grand total of 9 posts in the month of December 2006. He was already on a sabbatical from ActiveRain when he shared this meme with ActiveRain.  Jay quoting Mary McKnight explains memes to AcitiveRain:

"I was memed this morning by my friend and competitor, Paul Chaney of Blogging Systems. For those of you that don't know what a meme is: It's a thought stream carried from one person to another, or, to be more precise, a "unit of cultural information transferable from one mind to the other," so says Wikipedia. Basically, it's the blogging equivalent of a chain letter. The cool thing about blogging is that the meme can be tracked. Entire websites are devoted to doing just that. Some memes, however, are deliberate...sort of a social game to build community and engender relationships."

Meme posts outside ActiveRain - same meme no points

Kevin Boer on 3 Oceans Real Estate wrote me meme memed

Greg Swann on the Bloodhound Blog wrote I'm it - and I don't want to be . . .

Greg Tracy of BlueRoof Real Estate Blog Salt Lake City Real got creative... Greg changed things around but it is still the theme of the meme (theme and meme rhyme for those on ActiveRain who call it a "Me Me") ... Greg Tracy wrote his BlueRoof + Sellsius =

Blogging experts did the meme on their "real" blogs - it's not about points

Mary McKnight of RSS Pieces wrote Tag, I'm it! Paul Chaney Memed Me.

Jim Cronin of the Real Estate Tomato wrote What Is A Meme You Ask? Meme Me Up Mary

Pat Kitano participated in that meme in December 2006 Blogosphere Game and gave this insight to memes:

"Meme tagging ! The blogosphere provides its participants with "charade"-like games to break the ice... and frankly, the party like atmosphere is really welcome this time of year..."

Yes the third or fourth time you get that same meme it gets a little old. Just say no. Or be creative like Linda Davis was when she got tagged again recently...OK so I lied. Too good to play a game of tag in the blogosphere? Silliness? Childish? Just for points? Before new members decide they are going to be all business and spend their time on ActiveRain posting listings or posting over and over what a great real estate person they are, the ought to listen to the real estate blogging experts Paul Chaney, Mary McKnight, Pat Kitano, Jim Cronin... people who really know something about blogging. Don't be fooled and mired in the mediocrity that sometimes pervades ActiveRain. It's not about points!

Share a link here to a meme outside ActiveRain

I got memed twice when that meme first started so I did one on my other blog. If you did the 5 things about me meme on your other blog share the link in the comments here please.

If you did not do this meme on another blog but admire a blogger like Christine Forgionne, Frances Flynn Thorsen, Maureen Frances, Kristal Kraft, Bonnie Erickson, Ann Cummings on her first outside blog (on RealTown Blogs), Teresa Boardman, Brian Brady, Sellsius Real Estate Blog... look at their blogs for the meme. See if this meme is there. If you find real estate bloggers you admire participated in the meme share the outside ActiveRain link here.

edit please don't share links to your ActiveRain memes here.  It is connected if you did it right.

Hi Maureen, I've been meemed again twice this month but haven't had time to do it, still trying to think of what else I can share. I love how the meme concept/game lets us get to know the more human side of our online buddies.

I've never written a MEME. That's a good thing because I reallly have a boring life anyway. I have been asked but I always turned them down. I'm just weird like that. It must be the rebel in me. I do like reading them though.

Hey Maureen - I've enjoyed reading other people's memes, it allows us to see sides of members here we likely wouldn't see otherwise. I was a little hesitant in my first meme, because I couldn't think of anything anyone would want to know. And then I got memed a second time, which is the one I did on my other first blog that you mentioned in your post. There are still new memes being done here on AR, and I will continue to read them as I come upon them - a lighter side to all of us is most enjoyable to read. Ann

Maureen:  I don't look at the MeMe's for points, rather getting to know fellow AR members to see who share similar personality characteristics for my referrals.  I know that alot of members feel that some of these are just plain 'silly' but, I not only want to refer my clients to a top-notch agent but, I want them to have some personality.  A 'blah' agent showing my friends and clients around a strange city is not going to make my friends/clients feel that I have done them justice!

I agree with you though, that you don't have to post a MeMe to 'fit in' to the group!  It is VERY hard to write about yourself and I COMPLETELY understand when someone does not want to write a MeMe!

Maureen -I like reading any post that is engaging and interesting. I learned more about people on AR from their memes. The ones I liked most is from people who make it fun reading and don't take themselves too seriously.  I just wrote my 2nd meme and quite honestly, for some reason, it took more time to write then some real estate ones. When no one reads then, thats tough:) Memes to me are a way to bring some spice into our interactions on this forum.

some people don't need a meme (rhymes with dream)  to break the ice, others do.

The "5 things about me" meme (it's not a me me it's a meme rhymes with theme) is just one of many memes out in the blogoshere or here on AR.  The "5 things about me" meme is the game of tag  we see the most on ActiveRain but there are others.

Thanks all for the comments!

I've been Meme'd a couple of times and always get too busy to follow through with actually doing one. I guess I better get with it, before everyone thinks I'm being a snob  :)

Oops I should have said something earlier but had a busy day.. Don't share  more links to memes (rhymes with  dream) on ActiveRain blogs. The last two paragraphs of this post  are about sharing links to outside blogs ... If you did a blog on your other blog.  Or going out to find memes on outside blogs of good bloggers, really good bloggers, so you can see that there is a real estate blogosphere outside AR.

A meme should be  easy to find on your ActiveRain blog.  It should be tagged, it may be posted to the ActiveRain meme group.  If you did it correctly there are links to it from the person who tagged you and the members who you taggged. That's why it's viral. This post is about other blogs, outside AR. You can talk about being memed on AR but don't share a link to a meme on ActiveRain here.  We can find it if we want to read it.  Thanks.

Sorry I did not say OUTSIDE link here but I have addred emphasis to places where it says other blog, outside blog now.  Thanks.  It says:

Share a link here

Ryan: Does it seem snobby not to do a meme when invited?  I don't know that I think of it that way. It's just a missed opportunity for some IMHO. If someone from your sphere of influence (a non real estate blogger) would meme you (the point of blogging is to carry on conversation) would you ignore it? I was memed by a non real estate blogger in my market.    It's about networking.

I was meme'd a short time ago but didnt do one because I had no idea what it is.... so its just 5 things about me? I feel bad I ignored it... Which I see is why some people don't like them- pushes it on someone else.  I guess it is like everything else- a choice.  Do it or don't....

Again thanks all for the comments.

If you want to be inspired by some really good real estate bloggers who know how to play in the blogosphere here are some on their outside blogs doing the meme.  They weren't  doing the meme  for points on their real real estate blogs ... they weren't afraid of looking silly or letting the public see a different side of themself. Some of these people are AR members some aren't:

Maureen Francis wrote Me-MO

Teresa Boardman wrote  Meme, my turn

Sellsius Real Estate Blog  wrote From Meme to You

Ann Cummings wrote AGAIN!! I've Been MEMED Again!!

Jay Thompson, the Phoenix Real Estate Guy wrote Tagged - Five Things You Don’t Know About Me (and probably don’t care about)

Bonnie Erickson wrote: Tag, I'm It!

Angus wrote:  More than you probably want to know about me... in my Meme

ActiveRain is just an itty bitty part of the real estate blogosphere,  In some ways it's connected. In other ways it is a dead end street. If you are looking for excuses not to participate you can take your pick. If you were offered an opportunity to participate and chose not to, it's OK.  No excuse is necessary.

Hi Maureen - thanks for putting that link up there. I just went back and read both of my memes, and the comments, too. Those really were fun to do, and I think it's a lot of fun to read everyone else's, too. I liked the book meme that went around some time after these memes - I found some great books that I wanted to read from others memes. Ann

Ann I wonder if I memed you on the book meme. I always remember a conversation on RealTalk about books.  It was a topic that was started when agency or other conversations would get overheated.   Someone would say "What's on your nightstand?" and people would list the books they were currently reading... the first time I ever saw it happen on RealTalk you listed a lot of books and someone made a crack about the size of your nightstand or I think that you had a dining room table for a nightstand... I probably left that comment on your book meme or maybe mine.  I am predictable.

Maureen... I didn't realize meme's were so "controversial. I saw them, learned about my community, and when meme'd I responded. I think they are kindof fun and definitely show a different side of who we are. My meme was actually used in a meme trivia hunt once. I think they are all in fun, any more thought put into them just seems to make a mountain out of a molehill to me...

Stephen I probably said this above somewhere and am repeating myself.  There are people on AR who think whatever anyone else is doing that they are NOT doing should be stopped!  Or take the stand that they ought to be stopped from doing posts with  photos.  posts with market reports.  posts that require some research... adding links to a post.

Maureen, I think you summed it up best when you said "There are people on AR who think whatever anyone else is doing that they are NOT doing should be stopped!" One of the things that makes AR so great is the diversity. If we all wrote the same thing then this place would be awful boring.

MM,

You`re so right! Everyone is entitled to an opinion on A/R.

Meme`s are a significant part of A/R in defining who many are here, which is a good thing.
