Did you know you might lose your Internet Monday July 9th, 2012

Real Estate Agent with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices 01238708

Did you know you might lose your Internet Monday July 9th, 2012?

I was watching the news last night, an occurrence that is becoming rare since I do not like to be bombarded with bad news. Well long and behold I have my attention the News Caster states that the Internet on my computer might be shut down.

Armed with this information I went and searched and discovered that  tens of thousands of Americans may still lose their Internet service Monday unless they do a quick check of their computers for the DNSChanger malware that could have taken over their machines more than a year ago.

Needless to say I went on the FBI’s website and checked my IP Address with their data base. I would advise you do the same, to make sure. According to the FBI despite repeated alerts the number of computers that are infected is more than 277,000 worldwide. FYI this is a decrease from about 360,000 in April. The FBI believes that there are about 64,000 computers still affected. Here is the result of my test. Hope you will have the same result.

Once you are on the website here is the link to test you computer

If all goes well this is what a good report should look like:

Hi Endre - This has been talked about on all of the tv news stations, and anyone who doubts it is real will probably find out the bad news later.  There are millions of computers affected, and I'm glad you are helping to spread the word.  I have been telling everyone I know.  My computers show a nice green result, so I hope that is good news!

I have vaguely heard of this, but didn't know how seriously to take it... I'm constantly getting emails etc warning of the latest viruses etc. I guess it wouldn't hurt to just check. I'm off to do just that.

Endre, I always wonder if this stuff is legit or not. The conspiracy theorist in me is thinking this might be something the government uses to track us more.

Perhaps I can help clarify the issue.

First, there are NOT millions of computers infected.  The number is much smaller.

The type of threat is different from a traditional Root Kit, Buffer Overflow, etc. type of virus.  Those tend to be destructive to data on your computer meant to disable your computer or comprimise the data on your system (ie, capture logins, steal data, etc.).  The threat of this virus is to alter the DNS settings on your system and/or router.

What this does is change the pointer for your DNS (domain name server).  This effectively will redirect your web sessions to their rogue DNS servers instead of the correct DNS server provided by your ISP.  Think of the role of a DNS server as one to translate a text web address to a numerical address.  For example from www.google.com to  If you enter www.google.com into your address bar, it takes you to the google search page.  Likewise, if you entered into your address bar, it will also take you to the google search page. The point of a DNS server is to make it easier on humans to enter names of websites instead of trying to remember a long number string.

Therefore, if you were operating a rogue DNS server and could get DNS settings to point to your servers, you could effectively drive people to whatever sites you wanted to drive them to. Think about how you could use this...you could have sites up that download other malicious s/w onto their system as it loads up a webpage.  You could load up keyloggers, you could drive them to porn sites, you could drive people to pay per click sites.  Lot's of different ways something like this could be used by someone with less than honorable intentions.

Therefore, yes, this threat is real however, it appears that the number of infected computers is not all that many compared to the number of PCs on the internet.

While the risk is probably low, it is a good idea to be safe and make sure both your PC DNS settings and if you are connected via a router, that the router DNS settigns are OK.

Wow a feature at that, congratulations Of all the millions LOL of these type post I have yet in 15 years know anyone that have been effected.

I liken this to our weather channel, seems like every year we hear more and more about hurricanes and yet we get about two a year. We should worry as much about the deterioration of the country as we worry about this nonsense.

Well I am so glad I was able to help everyone! Good news, if you can get on the internet now that means your DNS was not changed and you are fine. The FBI caught these guys last year and let the servers continue to function until about two hours ago so that they do not create havoc. Contrary to popular belief this effected not just PC's but MAC as well. Thank you for everyone's comment and support!
