No, I am not in Spain!

Real Estate Broker/Owner with Hamm Homes

No, I am not in Spain!

No, I am not in Spain, maybe I wish I was but no I am not there.  Yesterday morning started out with my daughter calling me to say that she received an email telling her I was in Spain and needed help and to reply to the email.  Of course, I just talked to her on Sunday and she knew I was not on vacation.  Next a cousin in Pennsylvania, email me and asked how she could help.  She hit the reply button and it was a long story of how I was beat up and my wallet was stolen and my luggage was gone and I needed Euro to get by till the police could track down the guy and get everything back.

It gets better, I had one of my clients that I sold a 203k home to in November and she wanted to know how to get $100 to me (how nice).  So the hackers got into my email addresses somehow and emailed every one of them.   My business partner, Belinda Spillman, got phone calls from builders that know us to find out what happen to me, she could not believe how many people called.

I do not know how people hack into accounts and have people fall for this but I am ok.  I AM NOT IN SPAIN, so if you want to help me, just say a prayer that this does not happen to you.  I have also changed my email address.

It is crazy how individuals have the ability to hack emails and passwords so easily these days, My dad received basically that exact same message from friends a couple of times in the last few months. Make sure you confirm the accidents first people before you start firing off money to a stranger!

I got an email from "you" saying you were in Spain...but I knew better because I read you blog and know you would have mentioned something like this, lol! Glad your clients and business partners were concerned though - it's like knowing who would attend your funeral ;)

It was funny how many people called and emailed me wanting to know how they could help you.  At least you know you have lots of friends out there if you ever really did need their help.  Ole!

My email was hacked several months ago - I have no idea how these hackers pull it off but it is an excellent idea to change your passwords on a regular basis.  Glad to hear you had so many people willing to help you :)

This one bites!  My sister was dying of cancer... The week Hospice took over her email was hacked like you described saying she needed money.  Her cell phone rang like crazy with her friends and co-workers wondering how they could help with funds.  Talk about bad timing on during an awful situation.  I was furious to say the least.

Thanks for sharing your story.  This is a very common scam.  I hope none of your friends sent money.

Have an outstanding week with your camera in hand.

Hey Will, Those hackers belong behind bars and I do hope the FBI starts putting them there. This happens everyday and just think of all the people who send the money because it tugs on their heart strings!

Oh boy. Just recently heard about this happening to one of my cousins.  I received this bizarre email from his address and replied right back to him and asked him if he sent it and of course he said No.  A couple of days later he had to let everyone on his contact list know - He'd been HACKED. Dirty stinkers them hackers!

Will -- what a horrible story but on the bright side -- you can see how many people care about you and want to help.   I would keep an eye on Belinda to see if you see any large purchases, planned trips or extragavant dinners --- I mean --- you need to make sure......

Will - These scammers must fool some people because they keep sending out the scam emails.  Sorry to hear that they got into your email but good to hear that you were not in trouble in Spain.

Hi Will,

In the past two weeks, I have had 3 friends hacked and they send me a message that is pretty easy to figure out. 5 names across and all in alphabetical order. Plus the first on, McAfee Opened up and said "Whoa are you sure you want to go there?" NO I do not so I closed it immediately and sent it to my spam folder. The hackers are busy so everyone needs to be careful.

Hello Will:

Wonders never cease!  Not in Spain, not beat up, and no wallet stolen.....good for you.  The crooks are getting ever so clever about how the scam works.  Hope you can recover with minimal damage.
