My website is for Yucaipa Real Estate, and I know that inbound links from other websites are the most critical aspect of gaining rankings in google.
I was referred to a social media "bookmark site" delicious.com, where I could create a profile and bookmark pages. So I created my own profile and bookmarked everypage on my site with original and unique link text. Lots of quality descriptions about the city content, restaurant guide and yucaipa politics.
I saw after a week or two, these links show up in my google webmaster account(if you don't have one yet you should!). I even got increased "relevance" for my area because of it. However, I feel a little conflicted about this self promotion...
On the one hand, it seems deceptive because your just self promoting. On the other side, you could say that you are just as valid a source for a bookmark as any other user. You also are creating unique relevant content for the bookmark site, and also providing a public service by getting you (hopefully) quality website and it's information out to more users.
What do you think? Is it shady or just good busines??
