How Do You Organize Photos? I Mark the Ones I want to Find and Re-Use

I find that management of my photos consumes a large part of each day. Lately I have been naming them starting with a tilde "~" or carret "^" or sometimes with a "+" character. I favor these special characters because they do not carry special meanings. I can then do a search on them using ~*.jpg or ~N*.jpg, for neighborhood photos or ^A*.jpg for Animals for example.

Since I am a listing specialist, I have many property photos that I use in MLS Listings and Virtual Tours. I have also been naming property photos ~01roomname.jpg or similar to make them sort the way I want them to sort. This approach also separates the photos that have been cropped, resized or otherwise corrected from the original photos which I store in the same directory.

Does anyone have tips on how to better organize photos?

John - Thank you for sharing detailed quality information on how to organize photos. I mark the ones I want to find and re-use.

Thanks for your comment, John. How do you mark the ones you want to use? After I mark the best ones as described in my blog post, I copy them into directories and subdirectories according to topic.

I throw them all into iPhoto, and then assign keywords. Every property photo gets its address as a keyword. Additional keywords could be interior/exterior/room name/city/ etc. Then all I have to do is search by keyword and all the photos I want show up. Wildlife photos get keyworded "wildlife" and also the name of the animal.

The keyword search function is awesome.

Thanks, Tim, for your suggestion. Tagging the photos is probably the best answer. It appears that there is no Windows version of iPhoto and that Picasa seems to be the favorite for this function on the PC. I tried Picasa a few months ago and not like it too much.  I will try it again.

I put them into folders.  When I go on vacation I may have many subfolders.  Boy do I have a lot of folders!

Yes, Mike, I also have a lot of folders. A tree organization really does help.
