Marketing Luxury Real Estate: The Agelessness of a Championship Mindset

Unlike some professions marketing luxury real estate is a game you can play at the level of market leadership at any age in your professional career. However, It takes the mindset of a champion and the championship mindset is ageless.

Both Serena Williams and Roger Federer have proven that point at this year’s Wimbledon Tennis Tournament. Serena became the first woman over 30 to win a Grand Slam title since Martina Navratilova over 20 years ago.  And, she did so against odds that she would not return to the sport due to health problems.  Federer looked like he peaked back at the Australian Open in 2010.  Now, he is number one in the world, again.

What motivates a champion?  What did these two tennis champs have to prove to the world?  Sure it feels good to the admiration of peers and fans alike.  But, a true champion has a core inner conviction to be the best he or she can be.

Market leadership is a game that requires strategy to gain or sustain the championship level. First, it requires identifying the winning formula to out think your competition. Then, it requires the consistency of repeating the winning formula over and over again.

But, without the mindset of a champion there is no strategy that can get you there.  What is that mindset? It is a mental state devoid of self-doubt. It is a singular focus on a desired outcome that necessitates quickly releasing contradictory thoughts, accessing memories of previous triumphs and maintaining the perspective of what is at stake.

In our professional practice, as brand strategists to luxury real estate marketing professionals, we work exclusively with market leaders or their challengers. Our clients are those who already have the mindset of a champion or are reaching for it regardless of their age. Like Federer and Williams, they are true inspirations.

Hi Ron & Alexandra - I speak on behalf of all of us old folks when I say "Thanks" for pointing out that we can still play the game well. My body may be sending me dire warnings, but the real estate game is mostly played with the mind, and mine is still functioning at the top of its game and generating plenty of positive attitude.

Those are two great examples of Heroes. What makes them champions is their willingness to demonstrate with enthusiasm and commitment that persistence pays off. These two athletes leanred to overcome the invisible barriers that often keeps others from even trying. What I've learned from them, especially Serena is that you can eliminate barriers that interfere with your initiatives.

I agree with John McCormack, "You guys market luxury like none other! You're on top of your game!"

Getting to the top of the real estate profession requires as much preparation as a sports professional.  That is the simple reason that most do not get near the top.

Alexandra, good analogy. I agree with Q-man's assessment, you two are at the "top of your game." Mind set - our energy focus, etc. is so critical to success...you are what you believe. Simply, there is no way to get to the top if you don't "know you can do it." And, sadly, all the self-doubt will manifest itself into "keeping you down." That's just the way it is...

I've been told that for years and applied it when I reinvented my business 3 years ago.  By telling myself I was a top producer and worthy of listing "with the big dogs", I've been able to secure record setting business and achieve my goal.

Tim and Mark,

Telling yourself and believing it, is the first part of the equation.  Very often people get there and not further.  The real work comes in achieving it with work at first.  Roger was telling the crowds how he worked harder than ever to get there.  He believed it and he had been there 6 times before.

REO folks,

Thanks for the invite to your group on Linked In.  We appreciate it.

Dick,

Don't get me started on the word "old fols".  I have seen too many young folks with dead eyes and no dreams whatsoever, and I have seen others folks with the twinkle of life and joy creating fireworks with their enthusiasm.  Point is we have a soon to be 75 year old market leader who is consistently #1 in that markeplace.  This person by their own admission does not need the money, and this individual enjoys the work from start to finish.  This person works out five times a week, has a trainer for weights, runs, swims, does pilates and yoga...does not want any young whippersnappers to take the #1 place.  Did I mention that this person's health is excellent --no aches or pains or any of that other "expected old stuff"!  OOPS I did get started! LOL

Belinda,

A lot of people find their Inner Champion and then they go to sleep...that is just the beginning, the seedling so to speak.

John,

Thank you as always for your kind words, and sometimes being the best is not enough, you have to keep upping your game, those young ambitions ones are ready to catch you.

Patricia,

What makes those two incredible is that they are still willing to improve...Serena's serve saved her as did Roger's.  They are constantly looking for all those teeny tiny adjustments that make the difference and they love the game.  They are both masters at what they do with a wide open willingness to increase their competence...they just won't stop and sit on their laurels.

Roy,

Absolutely right on!  It is the preparation, focus, passion and dedication where people start to wane on the thought of all that and disappear.  This is true of every business.

Debb,

All those doubts---well, I could do a rant and rave about that also...You just have to "DO IT", regardless of those thoughts, till those thoughts have no value whatsoever in your world. Thanks for the kudos, we appreciate it.

Toni,

Absolutely, your friends should be those who encourage---not the ones whose annoint themselves as "devil's advocates".  They just reinforce one's self doubts.

Bryan,

Good for you, and we are delighted you have achieved your goals..

It really does take a lot of discipline to focus and spend the time we do on marketing. I don't think most people realize how much work goes into it.

Patti,

I know you are right about that, and a strategy streamlines it, because it becomes a black and white world, it either fits the strategy or does not.

Kathy,

Absolutely, focus, focus, focus.  We both love sports, because of what it takes to achieve.

Lou,

They certainly do, and I am so honored to be working with champions.  They are so special and a complete delight. A

One has to be incredibly narcissistic for the admiration of others to provide enough motivation to be the champion of which you speak.  A passion for excellence will motivate a champion more consistently and over a much longer time than any "attaboys" from others.  It's gotta burn in your gut!

Jeff,

I agree.  Admiration is not what they are after, nor is it the money...It is a self motivated urge that they are following, the admiration is nice as is the money, but after they have all that, they still want another championship...A

William,

Thank you, I will let Ron know as he is the author.  Thanks for the compliment.

Larry and Sheila,

Good point one echoed by manty.
