Is Your Pissing Contest Really Worth It?

Columbia, SC Real Estate                          Is Your Pissing Contest Really Worth It?

Once and a while in this business you will come across  individuals that are for lack of a better way to put it, difficult. I know it comes as a surprise, but trust me it happens. And once and a while, these people will be vital to the process of selling or closing a home. Another agent that rubs you the wrong way, a buyer or seller that's a little beyond demanding. Maybe a lender or an appraiser that finds a soapbox for one reason or another and decides you should be their audience.

The best thing to remember in any of these situations is, you tend to catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar. Keeping your cool in a bad situation is certainly no easy feat, but in the end, flying off the handle will only add a second jackass to the equation and you already have one more than you need.

The fact of the matter is that when you get suckered into a pissing match with anyone else throughout the process, usually the only people that suffer are your clients. They hired you to represent them, not your ego to block the path. Standing up for yourself is just fine when required, but just make sure you're not getting in your own way and more important, make sure you're not in your client's way.

JL, as I have gotten older and, hopefully, wiser, I am more likely to walk away.

JL, one side does have to stay cool to keep things on track.... if it is not THEM well then it is YOU. Two sides at loggerheads with each other accomplishes nothing. Great point..

JL agreed. Staying calm and level headed creates a better outcome in the short and long term.  I stay out of those situations....and if somebody just can't calm down I insist we take a break and come back around to the topic when he/she has calmed down and stops spewing garbage.  I don't run across this often -at all -but when it happens if it's not stopped it can suck the energy our of anybody - if we let it.

Yes, the clients are the first to lose. Also, the first to lose the temper is usually a loser in the long run.

I don't care for the term but understand what you are saying. There are just some clients that don't know how to communicate without being combative.

Terrific advise!  Sometimes people need to remember to suck in their claws!
