400,000+ Yahoo email accounts hacked!

By

Yahoo has confirmed that their systems were compromised and that over 400,000 of their email users accounts were hacked!  I just learned about his about 2 hours ago and already one of my friends account sent me crap.

Here is an article on the LA Times with more details:  http://www.latimes.com/business/technology/la-fi-tn-yahoo-confirms-hack-20120712,0,2875544.story

The surprising thing to me was that even with all the information out there about email hacking and the importance of strong passwords (although it wouldn't have helped in this hack) that the top five reoccuring passwords were:

  • 123456
  • password
  • welcome
  • ninja
  • abc123
Hey all you Ninja's out there, we can see you see your passwords.

One good idea for your email accounts is to add yourself as a contact.  That way, if it is compromised, you will probably send yourself an email via the virus or spammer so at least you will know before 100 of your closest friends call blaming you for corrupting their accounts.

I am surprised that one of the top five passwords wasn't "Please".  Where has everyone's manners gone?  LOL

Jim, that's a fantastic idea! Put yourself in as a contact so you'd be notified that your account has been hacked. Love it.

One of the top passwords was "password"? That almost deserves an account being compromised.

I've been getting a lot of emails lately without subject line... Often an indication of a spam email sent from an account whose owner doesn't know he got hacked. I guess that explains it. Best to change you passwords every month or so even if it is a pain.

I understand facebook is adding a banking online through fb. That should be interesting since their security is about nil.

I was amazed to see how a person posted real time videos by accessing people's active webcams just by searching for the default password.  Companies that sell wireless routers used to send them out with password protection but their tech support lines spent too much time dealing with lost passwords, etc., that they started shipping them unsecured.  Too many people just used them as Plug n Play devices and since it worked right out of the box, they never even though about changing passwords.
