WHEN YOU'VE BEEN AROUND AS LONG AS I, you come to realize that

Folks are folks.

It doesn't matter what the field of employment.

Over the years I've worked in many fields, university, government, consulting, training, self employment in 4 different companies.

In my opinion, the percentage of ethical/unethical, caring/uncaring, conscientious/careless and honest/dishonest members of the real estate industry is. . . . .

NO MORE, NOR NO LESS THAN ANY OTHER GROUP OF EMPLOYEES, REPRESENTATIVES IN ANY INDUSTRY.

in fact, if the numbers were known, I suspect that we're a tad above the crowd for ethics/honesty/industriousness, etc.

So there!!!

Integrity

in·teg·ri·ty adherence to moral and ethical principles; soundness of moral character; honesty.

Lets face it, Real Estate Agents do not have the greatest reputation.

It is up to us to change that belief.  Have  you checked your Integrity meter lately?  Sometimes I think people can  get so caught up in the outcome, they  lose sight of reality and what is important.  Being a real estate agent can really test our moral integrity and what we are made of.... I think sometimes we need to stop and check our Integrity meters to keep things in perpective.

~ Do you truly care about  your clients wishes?

~ Are you withholding information that might kill a deal for fear of not getting paid?

~ Do you practice honesty in all of your communication?

~ Do you treat other agents, escrow , title or lenders  with decency & respect ?

~ Are you who you say you are?

We need to remind ourselves one deal is not worth our reputation. People want to work with people of Integrity! No one likes to be swindled, manipulated or taken advantage of.  As Realtors it is important to always keep our Integrity in check.

Do you have any to add to the list?

That's a word I use all the time with my daughter.  She is coming to hate it!  Bottom line it means whole or in harmony.  It shares the same root as "integer" - which is a whole number.

Lenn it only takes a few to give the many a bad name. It seems to take a hundred good deeds to overcome on bad apple, and even then people seem to remember the bad apple.

The only people I ever hear talking down Realtors is Realtors. The public has no more issues with us then with any other profession.

I totally agree. People are just people.

Don't know about other states, but Pennsylvania has a pretty strict Real Estate Commission that doesn't hesitate to enforce standards, which goes at least a bit towards keeping the ethically-mutateable somewhat more likely to toe the line.

Hi Lenn - I agree with you that most realtors are honest and hardworking and really do look out for their clients.  It's too bad that the few who are sloppy or who bend the rules are the ones who make the headlines.

These days, hardworking and honest are separating the agents in the "herd"...consumers can tell someone with little or no knowledge of the industry and there are fewer and fewer part-timers because of the fees involved.

Lenn,  Correct, with a big enough population we're going to have performers on each end of the bell curve.  Fortunately the really bad ones are pretty infrequent.

I think our organization of Realtors police ourselves pretty relentlessly. I know when I worked for a bank and for an oil company (later named Enron) we never did that. (That sounds funny thinking back to all the banking fraud and misteps  committed by banks and oil companies since the seventies.) I guess we can safely say they don't take ethics as seriously as we do.

I think that more Realtors® call each other out than the general public.  There are those that don't think highly of Realtors®, but there always will be and it's very doubtful we will change their minds.  Just work with those who appreciate us and the others can go to their own devices :)!

Hello Lenn,

Great repost, and I agree...every industry has "the good, the bad and the ugly"! (so to speak)

Hi Lenn.  Kimberlee mentioned agents.  There is a huge ethical difference between licensed agents and Realtors.

Conrad.  I don't believe so.  I don't believe that a Code of Ethics can make a person ethical.

Lisa.  I agree completely.

Brenda.  I'm not convinced that being a REALTOR makes one ethical.

Sussie.  I'm not yet convinced that the appearance of ethics, i.e., the Code of Ethics makes agents more ethical.  I developed that belief after many years of working with REALTORS.

Liz and Bill.  BINGO!!

Wallace.  The fees involved are crushing, aren't they??

Susan.  I don't know where I am because I see ethical and rule violations in many transactions.  It's a pure pleasure to work with an agent you can trust.

Nancy.  The commissions have the rules and license laws, but that rarely slows an unethical agent, otherwise we wouldn't be encountering them regularly.

Joyce.  Agreed.  The consumer runs into unethical folks in all industries regularly.

George.  Indeed and we have to constantly prove ourselves to new contacts.

Jay.  You probably teach more by example.
