currant pudwill farms Pismo Beach

Pudwill Farms near Pismo Beach (San Luis Obispo County) grows these beautiful red currants, and bring them to the Santa Barbara Farmers Market their beautiful variety of berries.  This tiny berry is related to the gooseberry.  Currants are black, red, or white.  The black ones are used for preserves, syrups and liqueurs. These lovely little gems grow on bushes.  They can be eaten off the vine, however they are quite tart. They are not related to what is sold as dried currants which are Zante grapes/raisins.

An article in the LA Times remarked "Their dense flavor is perfectly suited to jams and coulis, which also allow you to easily strain out the seeds. A bit of fine mesh is all it takes, unless you want to duplicate the technique used in Bar-le-Duc, a town in northeastern France famous for its red currant preserves. There, since the 14th century, the seeds have been removed from the fruit by hand. With a quill."

Currants are high in vitamin C and beneficial antioxidants.  The black currants are being studied for its medical and nutritional benefits.  To read more about the medical benefits of black currants, click here.

Wishing you all a lovely Sunday, Cheers, Ron & Alexandra

We had the peach/tomato salad last night...and we loved it. The only thing we did without were the breadcrumbs, although, I'll bet they would have been a nice addition. We both marveled at how the the tomato and peach juices blend with the Olive Oil to create a nice dressing. The feta made it creamy too, it's siimply a delicious summer salad. While I made it, I told my husband how much I like you two and look forward to your Farmers Market photos and posts. Always so beautiful and tasty on a variety of levels. Today I'm learning more about currants. :)

Alexandra, We are making it again tonight too, lol. My bonus daughter always comes over for dinner. I will add the croutons and fresh mint...perfect suggestion. Yummy, I can hardly wait.

Wow those are beautiful.  I have done some canning in my day.  Usually the delicious Colorado freestone peaches which we are lucky enough to enjoy the end of August each year.  These sound like they would make some great jam.  It's not that difficult to do.

I know that my grandmothers and great grandmothers used currants frequently in their recipes but for the life of me I wouldn't know what they taste like only remembering the pucker they gave my face.

Dear Roy,

I was struck by the vibrancy of the color.  It looked like a gemstone, and at the same time translucent.

Debb,

One of these days, we are going to have to meet.  I had the opportunity to meet Mel here in Santa Barbara, and we had a delightful time, the three of us.  I am so glad you liked the salad, we had it again last night as I mentioned it to you, and we still could not get enough of it...Too bad I am out of peaches, but perhaps, I will sneak away tomorrow to the Downtown market.  Thanks for all the kudos, and I leaned a lot about currants through my research.

Belinda,

I have helped friends to can, however, I have not had the ambition float that way...I have so many projects that are waiting for me as it is, and let me make clear that I admire you for doing it...

Kevin,

Pucker equals tart, or did you kiss those lovely ladies for making you wonderful food?

Sharon,

I agree, although when we lived in Los Angeles, I used to go the Santa Monica market on Wednesday, and it was 4 blocks long and equally beautiful.  This is a bit smaller and more comfortable. A

Wanda,

Not many of us appreciate tart, I am glad you do, as I like lemons with a little salt. LOL A

Toni,

This is a small business, and they only grow berries, I am assuming it is the family that is taking care of the picking  A
