The expression “Modern Medicine” is often used to describe the state-of-the-art in healthcare.
When I was a child, new vaccines for poliomyelitis had just been developed, smallpox was being eradicated, and work was being done to eliminate “ordinary” childhood diseases such as mumps and the measles.
For the first time in human history the odds of a child surviving to adulthood became more of a certainty than a coin flip.
But as I look back to those days, the medical arts were primitive by today’s standards. There were no MRI’s, no arthroscopic surgery, and no computers to help diagnose an illness.
Technology and medicine are intrinsically entwined, and every day new technologies are being developed and implemented in health care.
This month’s “Modern” medicine may be a significant improvement over last month.
And next month it will be even better!
