Don't become a REALTOR, if...

Don't become a REALTOR, if...

  • You think it's EASY. The hours can be brutal and back-to-back days of work.
  • You think you'll get RICH quickly. It takes years and years for most Realtors to make a lot. Don't be fooled by the nice cars. Many Realtors didn't buy those cars with real estate income.
  • You think it will be fun because you like to SEE HOMES. Looking at nice homes is a very small part of the business and will not make you successful.
  • You think it will PAY THE BILLS. When you become a Realtor, expenses go up and income goes down. You not only have to pay your normal living expenses, but you have Realtor fees that can be significant.
  • You think you can do it PART-TIME. As licenses get harder to get and being a good agent takes more experience, part-timers are having a hard time justifying the costs.

If you want to be part lawyer, inspector, salesperson, negotiator, interior decorator, computer whiz, blogger, marketing expert, chauffeur and financial consultant...then you've come to the right place!

Love your job and you will succeed!

All good points Al~

My old brokerage used to have a school.  During the breaks I would LOVE to chat with the attendees to survey their intentions.  They would come in all wide eyed with the same reasons you mentioned above!  I never see their names floating around the MLS or in the real estate world.  That's why the failure rate is so high!!

Al-Fabulous points.  I have been in the business for four years.  Just in the last couple months, have I been able to survive off my real estate.  Praise jesus my husband has supported me.

You are right on!  I cannot believe how many people really believe the 'get rich quick-look at lovely homes all day' myth.  A friend of mine mentioned she might be interested in real estate but didn't consider herself much of a salesperson.  I assured her you can't make someone buy a house; its mostly paperwork and phone calls with appointments thrown in.

Great points all the way around!  I knew it wasn't going to be easy but the rewards are great!  There are some including myself who have a job to support my career in Real Estate.  My friends thought automatically I'll be seeing a lot money. No not the case. It takes some work, and more work to see some results. When you do see results, you can sit back and say it's worth it!

Great post too bad you can't link it to the 100's of real estate schools still promising rewarding careers with unlimited earnings...

Nice list - very true. I don't see how anyone can do it part time and make any money at it.
