Tomorrow is Opening Day at Del Mar, CA Race Track!!
In just about 24 hours we will hear the famous "and they're off!" at the Del Mar Race Track. Tomorrow, July 18, 2012 will mark opening day for the horse race season at the beautiful Del Mar Race Track. The season lasts through September 5, 2012. This is a very special year because the track will be celebrating it's 75th birthday! In 1937 one of the original developers, legendary Bing Crosby welcomed the first visitors to Del Mar Race Track. He and another member of Hollywood Royalty, Pat O'Brien picked a spectacular location in Old Del Mar, just south of Solana Beach, on the Pacific Ocean, at the mouth of the San Dieguito River, for their beloved pastime.
The 350 acres is also home to the San Diego County Fair, which just wrapped July 4th. It is pretty amazing the fairgrounds staff close up and clean up after the fair and are ready to host the horse racing just two weeks later. Tomorrow's Opening Day will see over 40,000 race fans in their finest hats and outfits. Opening Day is an over the top, see and be seen event. There will be a Hats Contest tomorrow and the Bing Crosby Grand Prize winner will be awarded two round trip American Airlines vouchers for travel anywhere in the U.S. There will
be several categories and other prizes. You will have to do much better than the hats pictured here to win the Grand Prize. The creativity at the hat contest is amazing, if you have ever been to San Francisco, think Beach Blanket Babylon. Over the (almost) two month season there will be several other special event days. Even if you aren't a huge horse racing fan there are many other fun things to do here. There will be eleven concerts, free with admission to the race track. The concerts feature top musical talent such as Cake, Reggae Festival featuring Ziggy Marley and Ben Harper. See the Calendar of Events to check out the musicians you do not want to miss.
