Pet Friendly Homes Boca Raton Florida - Know The Questions To Ask

Are you looking for a pet-friendly home in Boca Raton Florida?   Want to live in a condo on the ocean or a gated community?  You need to ask the right questions to see if your pet will be allowed in one of the condos or gated communities in Boca Raton?   Before you go   looking for a property, please read this post and ask questions.  Ask questions!  You could possibly wind up in a situation whereby the condo or community will accept you but not your beloved pets.   Unthinkable, you say, but it does happen.

Many of the MLS listings say pet restrictions or pet friendly.  What does that mean?  Pet Friendly can mean many things in Boca Raton FL.  It can mean that a particular beachfront condo allows one pet (might be a cat) with a maximum weight of 15 lbs, or it can mean a gated community that allows one pet maximum 25 lbs or  a gated community that will allow two pets with a maximum combined weight of 60 lbs.  The thing is:  You need to know!  You need to ask the questions.    Never assume that because it says pet friendly, your pet will be accepted.

In addition to weight restrictions, there are breed restrictions in almost all of the beachfront condos and gated communities in Boca Raton.  When I say Boca Raton, I am referring to Delray Beach, Highland Beach, Gulfstream, Ocean RidgeBoynton Beach, Lake Worth and the surrounding areas as well.  If you have what is considered a restricted breed or aggressive breed, you will get into a community.  Depending on the particular community's rules and regulations, they are often referring to pit bulls, rottweilers and possibly some other breeds as well which have included dobermans, German Shepherds and others.  If you have one of these breeds,  you should plan to buy a single family home on a street and not in a gated community.  Gated communities and even many non-gated community subdivisions have breed restrictions.   A house on a street is a safe bet for you.

If the pet restrictions of the community say one dog allowed,  that means two dogs are not allowed.  On occassion, an associations  may make an exception, but this is rare and not to be counted on.   Condo and homeowners associations  have rules and regulations in place.     It they say one dog up to 20 lbs maximum, they are not going to take your two 8-lb poodles.

Multiple pets also present problems in Boca Raton.   It's not impossible to find pet-friendly housing for more than one dog or cat, by any means, but please know your choices will be more limited.

There are gated communities and condos in Boca Raton that are truly pet friendly, will fit your needs and gladly welcome your beloved four-legged friends.  You want to be comfortable in your new home and not have neighbors staring at you because your dog weighs 3 lbs too much.

Boca Raton is pet friendly but you need to know the right questions to ask before you buy a home here.  Go with an agent who is familiar with pet-friendly properties.  Don't get caught!

Most of our condos and townhomes allow for 2 pets up to 60 lbs with some breeds not being allowed.  A lot of our rentals do not allow pets. If they do, there is usually a pet deposit that is nonrefundable. I am glad that there are provisions made that give pet owners the opportunity to have their animals.

Good morning Elyse. This is an excellent post and I hope it featured. You have identified real issues and concerns and it is important to work with an agent like you to get it straight. Suggested. Will you be in NY?

Betty,  It varies greatly by community.  You're lucky that most of your condos and townhomes allow for 2 pets.  Most of our condos at the beach allow no pets.  There are a handful that allow 1 pet and a very few that allow 2.

Sheila,  Thank you!!!  I will email you.

It is all too common that there are restrictions on pets. It can make thing most challenging for buyers.

I suggested this post as it is very important information to think about. I am so heartbroken to hear stories of people who can't keep their animals because they are moving to a place that won't allow pets. A little preparation can keep our furry friends where they belong, with their families.

Joan,  Yes, it does to those who consider their pets as part of the family.

Lisa,  Thank you.  I hear too many horror stories after the fact about people being approved by associations but their animals denied.

Shannon,  Thank you!  It takes homework and sometimes a little sacrifice on our part as to community, but it's a small price to pay to have our furry friends with us.

Great post. It is wise to ask before one signs the dotted line. I guess that is why hoa sends over the CC&R during escrow disclosure period.  I do need to start the practice of asking how many and what type of pet my buyers have.

Sarah,  Thanks.  In Florida it is required to get documents with condos but not so with HOAs.   I have heard horror stories with both.

Lou,  People are very attached to their furry friends today.  I have heard horror stories so if it helps one person, I'm happy.

Elyse, like Sheila, I felt that this was such excellent information and should have been featured! I love how you spelled out the exact details of what you need to ask regarding pet friendly and how "far" that goes. I used to work in longterm care where animals were accepted and there was ALWAYS a weight restriction. Even having a fat Terrier could be a problem! I am saddened that certain breeds get a bad rep. It's the owners who are often the problem...as you well know.

Gayle, Thank you.  There are so many restrictions in this area and they vary from community to community.  You have to ask.  Having worked in longterm care, you know how good animals are for the elderly and yet there are communities here that won't hear of an animal.  I had a Wheaten Terrier that was once denied for 3 lbs!   Yes, I know.
